On Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, Ahsan Ijaz, 29, of Brooklyn, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud. The U.S. Department of Justice said the scheme billed New York State Medicaid about $65 million for social adult day care and home health services that were not provided. A guilty plea is a conviction on the count that was admitted. It is not a sentence. Ijaz admitted conspiracy to commit health care fraud. The Justice Department said he is the 10th defendant to plead guilty in connection with the scheme. A federal judge will set any prison term on March 10, 2027. Ten years is the statutory maximum on that count. It is not the sentence.

On Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Ahsan Ijaz, 29, of Brooklyn, New York, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud. The department said he is scheduled to be sentenced on March 10, 2027, and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. A federal district judge will determine any sentence after considering the sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. The plea is a conviction on the admitted conspiracy count. The prison term waits until March. Ten years is the statutory ceiling, not a sentence already imposed. The announcement also named the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York.

According to court documents summarized by the Justice Department, Ijaz was an owner of Happy Family Social Adult Day Care Center, Inc., and Family Social Adult Day Care Center Inc., social adult day care centers in Brooklyn, and of Responsible Care Staffing Inc., a home health care fiscal intermediary in Brooklyn. Over approximately seven years, the department said, those businesses paid cash kickbacks and bribes to Medicaid recipients to induce them to enroll, and billed Medicaid for services that were not provided, including when some recipients were outside the United States. The department said the claims defrauded New York State Medicaid of approximately $65 million through social adult day care and home health claims. That figure is the department's account of the scheme tied to the plea. Friday's release does not announce a restitution amount.

The Justice Department said Ijaz is the 10th defendant to plead guilty in connection with the scheme. Friday's proceeding was the plea on the conspiracy count. It does not impose a prison term. March 10, 2027, is the date set for a judge to decide the sentence on the count he admitted. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Tuscaloosa police charged Daronte Collins with felony murder after a Saturday apartment-complex shooting.

WBRC's jail photo is captioned Daronte Collins and puts both men at 22. The Tuscaloosa Thread, citing Violent Crimes Unit Lt. Michael Hall, spells the charged man Deronte and puts both at 20. Patch and the Calhoun Journal also use Daronte and 20. A felony-murder count, which the Thread and the Journal describe as Alabama's rule when someone dies during a robbery, is not a finding that Collins fired the shot that killed Tyson. The Thread says the 25-year-old has not been charged.

High Point police charged Kymberli Bowden with first-degree murder in her 13-year-old daughter's death.

The Oct. 8 release is a new murder count on a case the department charged in 2025 as felony child abuse and concealment of death. It is not a trial. The murder-charge release says she remains in jail with no bond. WXII reported a violent-offense hold and a $1 million bond on the older counts. The 2025 release listed her age as 44. The murder-charge release, WXII, and FOX 35 Orlando list 45.

Chicago police charged Chevazz Campbell in the stabbing death of CTA janitor Julian Mobley.

A detention hearing is the first court date. It is not a finding that Campbell stabbed anyone. The department's Sunday release says he robbed and fatally stabbed a 41-year-old man in the 2000 block of West Lake Street. ABC7 and CBS Chicago name that man as Julian Mobley and describe a fare dispute that turned into a stabbing. The department's charge list and CBS Chicago's shorter summary do not match count for count.
