Prosecutors had been weighing the death penalty, and this plea takes that off the table in exchange for a sentence that will likely keep him in prison for the rest of his life. For the families, it means no trial and no chance of a jury walking it back. The detail that stays with you is the motive police described: a child support fight over roughly $2,800, and a couple who, according to one report, were in the store to buy a birthday cake for a boy who had just turned 12.
Alejandro Estrada, 43, has pleaded guilty to two counts of murder with use of a deadly weapon in the shooting deaths of Amanda Frias Rosas and her husband, Victor Frias Rosas, inside a Smith's grocery store in southwest Las Vegas, 8 News Now, FOX5 Las Vegas, KSNV News 3 and the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. The plea agreement was filed Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, and calls for consecutive sentences of 28 years to life on each count, or 56 years to life in total, in the Nevada Department of Corrections, according to the outlets. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 25.
The shooting happened May 12 at the Smith's near Maryland Parkway and Silverado Ranch Boulevard, the outlets reported. Police have said Estrada walked into the store, followed the couple down an aisle and opened fire, FOX5 reported. Amanda Frias Rosas was the mother of Estrada's two children, and the couple, who had married in 2025, worked at the store, according to the Review-Journal. 8 News Now reported that a friend and co-worker testified the couple were not working that day and had come in to buy a birthday cake for Amanda's son, who turned 12 that day. People at the scene subdued Estrada after he left the store, 8 News Now reported.
According to an arrest report described by 8 News Now, Estrada later told police he planned the killings, searched the store aisle by aisle for the couple and shot them in the back, leaving child custody dispute documents next to their bodies. Police have said Estrada and Amanda Frias Rosas were in a child support dispute and that he was worried about going to jail for not paying, the Review-Journal reported. KSNV reported he owed more than $2,800 in child support.
Estrada originally pleaded not guilty in May, and a grand jury indicted him in June, 8 News Now reported. He also faced 11 other charges, including home invasion, burglary and firing a gun into a structure, which were dropped as part of the plea deal, according to the station. 8 News Now reported in July that the Clark County District Attorney's Office was considering seeking the death penalty. He has remained in custody without bail since his arrest.
A guilty plea is a conviction once the court accepts it, and the judge will decide the final sentence on Nov. 25. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A Santa Fe judge sentenced Isaac Apodaca to life in prison plus 15 years in the sword killing of Grace Jennings.
The term The New Mexican reported from Thursday's hearing is life plus 15 years, consecutive, with the 15-year sentence served first. That is the judgment the paper says Judge Ellington imposed. KOAT's July 15 story still had the hearing on Aug. 24 and described the exposure as up to life. Kiara McCulley's 30-year figure is not in the same tense in every account: KOAT said in July that she is serving it, and The New Mexican said Thursday that she is expected to receive it.

A Fort Wayne jury found Domonique Drew guilty of murder in the gas station shooting of Scott Reed Armstrong.
Thursday's verdict is the jury's finding on the murder count and the firearm enhancement. The sentence has not been imposed. The surveillance video, the witness identification and the apology letter described in court records are the prosecution's account that the jury accepted. Drew's statement to police that the victim spat on him is his account. The jury did not credit it as a defense to murder.

Kevin Jaimes Martinez was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in a Knoxville laundromat shooting.
The conviction and life term came the same day, according to the district attorney. Under Tennessee law, a life sentence means 51 years before parole eligibility, WBIR reported. The stolen-phone motive is the prosecution's account of why the shooting happened. WBIR's report did not name the man who was killed.
