KCTV reported a Johnson County judge sentenced Axel Arellanes-Vara to life without parole.

KCTV, the Olathe Reporter, and FOX4 Kansas City reported Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that Arellanes-Vara was sentenced to life without parole for capital murder in the November 20, 2021, Olathe shooting that killed Angela Santiago, 45, and Jose Arellano-Rascon, 42. KMBC reported a life sentence and that he will spend the rest of his life in prison, and it did not print the words without parole. The Olathe Reporter gave his age as 40. FOX4 gave it as 41.

Life without parole is the term KCTV, the Olathe Reporter, and FOX4 printed for Tuesday. A life sentence, and the rest of his life, are KMBC's words, and they are not the same printed term. The September capital-murder verdict is the jury's finding. Tuesday is the sentence on that count. What the other two men have already had decided is not the same account on every page.

KCTV, in a story by Gabe Swartz published November 3, 2026, at 3:09 p.m. CST, reported that on Tuesday a Johnson County, Kansas, judge sentenced Axel Arellanes-Vara to life in prison without parole. The sentence on that page reads that a judge "sentenced Axel Arellanes-Vara was sentenced" to that term. It does not name the judge. It reported that in September a jury found him guilty of one count of capital murder, and that he was one of three suspects arrested and charged in September 2022 for a shooting that killed 45-year-old Angela Santiago and 42-year-old Jose Arellano-Rascon. It reported police found the two after being called to the 1000 block of East Frederickson Drive at approximately 1:25 a.m. on November 20, 2021. KMBC, by Nick Sloan, updated at 3:43 p.m. CST, reported he "received a life sentenced" on Tuesday after a jury found him guilty of capital murder in September, and that he will spend the rest of his life in prison. Life, and the rest of his life, are KMBC's words. Without parole is not on that page. KMBC reported that on November 20, 2021, Olathe police responded to reports of gunfire in the 1000 block of East Frederickson Drive, and that Santiago, 45, and Arellano-Rascon, 42, were found shot to death inside a vehicle. It reported they were a couple from Tonganoxie, Kansas. KCTV's Tuesday story does not print Tonganoxie. KMBC's Tuesday story does not print 1:25 a.m.

The Olathe Reporter, by Lucas Irizarry, on November 3, 2026, reported a 40-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to life without parole, and that a September jury found Arellanes-Vara guilty of capital murder in the killing of Santiago, 45, and Arellano-Rascon, 42, of Tonganoxie. It does not name the judge, and it does not print an address or a clock for the 2021 shooting. FOX4 Kansas City, by Brian Dulle, published at 3:48 p.m. EST, reported a 41-year-old man was sentenced, and that a Johnson County judge on Tuesday afternoon sentenced him to life in prison without parole for one count of capital murder. Forty, on the Olathe Reporter, and 41, on FOX4, are not the same age. Tuesday, and Tuesday afternoon, are not the same clock. KMBC's 2022 arrest story reported Olathe police had taken 37-year-old Axel Arellanes-Vara into custody, with 39-year-old Salvador Garcia-Zarate and 40-year-old Jesus Enrique Cereceda-Soto, and that all three had been charged with capital murder. Thirty-seven, in that 2022 story, is not 40 or 41. FOX4 reported officers responded to a shooting near South Sunset Drive and East Fredrickson Drive and found the bodies inside a parked vehicle. Fredrickson, on FOX4, and Frederickson, on Tuesday's KCTV and KMBC, are not the same spelling. KMBC's 2022 story reported they were found in a vehicle with multiple shattered windows on East Cedar Street, west of Sunset Drive, around 1:30 a.m. East Cedar Street, and the 1000 block of East Frederickson Drive, are not the same place. Around 1:30 a.m., and approximately 1:25 a.m., are not the same time.

KMBC reported three men were eventually charged with capital murder. It reported Jesus Enrique Cereceda-Soto pleaded guilty to first-degree premeditated murder and was sentenced in 2023, and that Salvador Garcia-Zarate was sentenced in 2025 after being convicted of two counts of intentional second-degree murder. FOX4 reported a second suspect, Salvador Garcia-Zarate, was sentenced last year to more than 27 years after he was convicted of second-degree murder. Two counts of intentional second-degree murder, and second-degree murder, are not the same count line. A sentence in 2025, and a sentence last year, can be the same year. More than 27 years is FOX4's figure. KMBC does not print it. FOX4 does not print Cereceda-Soto's name. The Olathe Reporter reported Cereceda-Soto entered a guilty plea in 2023, and that Garcia-Zarate pleaded not guilty last year. A guilty plea in 2023, on that page, does not name the count and does not say a sentence was imposed. Pleaded not guilty last year, on the Olathe Reporter, and sentenced in 2025, on KMBC, are not the same account. The Kansas City Star, by Laura Bauer, on September 9, 2026, at 4:02 p.m., reported a Johnson County jury found him guilty Wednesday of capital murder after more than a weeklong trial, and that sentencing was scheduled for November 3. It reported two additional suspects convicted in the double homicide were already serving time in the Kansas Department of Corrections. Already serving time, on September 9, and pleaded not guilty last year, on Tuesday's Olathe Reporter, are not the same status. The Star, citing court records, reported the Kia Forte was running with the gear shift in drive, that the car was registered to Santiago, that she was in the driver's seat, and that Arellano-Rascon was in the front passenger seat. It spelled the name Jose Arrelano-Rascon in that sentence and Arellano-Rascon in the records sentence. It reported the Star's account of records that video showed the victims pursued by assailants in at least one other vehicle identified as a Ford F-150, and that it appeared the shooters approached from the rear and shot them as they sat in the car. KMBC's 2022 story reported police were searching for a gray Ford F-150 and for four to five men. A Ford F-150, and a gray Ford F-150, and four to five men, are that earlier account. Tuesday's KCTV story does not print them. The Star reported Assistant District Attorneys Daniel Obermeier, Brandon Apperson, and Robert Short prosecuted the case, with the Olathe Police Department and the Johnson County Crime Lab, according to a release from Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe. The Olathe Reporter reported Howe announced in September 2022 that the three were arrested after an investigation by the Olathe Police Department and the district attorney's office. Tuesday's life-without-parole term, where those pages print it, is the sentence on the capital-murder count. On any count those pages do not describe as already adjudicated, a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Middle District of Georgia release says Judge Self sentenced Josue Serda to life in prison. FOX 5 Atlanta and WSB-TV say life without parole.

Life in prison, and life without parole, and there is no parole in the federal system, are not the same sentence. More than 50 kilograms of methamphetamine, and 50 kilograms, are not the same quantity. Three investigations, and one ring that seized more than 200 kilograms, are not the same case. A charge against Raul Perez-Mondragon is an allegation.

Roland Chatmon and three others pleaded guilty in the kidnapping of his uncle, Curtis Dixon.

A guilty plea is the conviction on the counts a defendant admits. It is not the prison term. FOX 2 and the New York Post say the four kidnapping defendants face a mandatory minimum of seven years and a maximum of life, with hearings in 2027. WXYZ reported that all five, including Kenneth Anderson, face that range. FOX 2, CBS Detroit, and the Post say Anderson was already sentenced to probation.

Trials

An Ottawa jury found Fsha Tekhle guilty of first-degree murder in the stabbing of Brkti Berhe.

A first-degree murder verdict is the jury's finding on that count. CBC wrote that the conviction comes with automatic life sentences, plural, and no eligibility for parole for 25 years. The Ottawa Citizen described an automatic sentence of life without parole for 25 years. No eligibility for parole for 25 years, and life without parole for 25 years, are not the same words. Tekhle admitted causing the death and pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.
