Benjamin Day pleaded guilty to murdering Maria Saceanu in a room prosecutors said he built to copy Dexter.

The Crown Prosecution Service said Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, that Benjamin William Day, 20, pleaded guilty Tuesday at Wolverhampton Crown Court to murdering Maria Saceanu, 24. The Daily Mail and the BBC reported he changed his plea during trial, after prosecutors said he lined an Airbnb room with plastic sheeting. Sentencing is Dec. 4.

A guilty plea entered in the middle of a trial is a conviction on that count. It is not the minimum term. In England and Wales, murder carries a mandatory life sentence, and the judge still has to set how many years must pass before parole can even be considered. Day's lawyers had been ready to argue self-defense. Tuesday's plea dropped that defense in open court. Dec. 4 is when the term gets a number.

The Crown Prosecution Service said Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, that Benjamin William Day, 20, of Yeadon Close, Redditch, pleaded guilty Tuesday, Oct. 6, partway through his trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court to murdering Maria Saceanu. Senior Crown Prosecutor Jonathan Roe said Day had tried to blame Saceanu for her own death by alleging she attacked him first, and that the evidence left him "with no choice but to accept responsibility." The Daily Mail and the BBC reported he had denied murder and was expected to claim self-defense, and to say he set the room up to film a tribute to the television series Dexter for TikTok. The Daily Mail reported that after an hour-long delay he returned to the dock, nodded to the clerk, and entered the guilty plea. He was remanded in custody. Sentencing is Dec. 4. A plea in the middle of a trial ends the defense the jury was about to hear. It does not set the minimum term.

The BBC reported Day, a University of Worcester forensic science student, was 19 at the time. The Daily Mail reported he had changed his course from journalism to applied biology and forensics. Both outlets reported prosecutors said he planned the killing of Saceanu, 24, on Dec. 20, 2025, in a rented room in Tividale in the West Midlands, lining the walls and floor with plastic sheeting. Prosecutor Rachel Brand KC told the jury he had been fascinated by Dexter, a show about a forensic scientist who kills and knows how to cover his tracks, and that his actions were those of a copycat, the Daily Mail reported. Brand said he made a shopping list on his phone on Nov. 18, 2025, that included knives, scissors, a mask, an apron, gloves, plastic sheeting, duct tape, a staple gun, cleaning chemicals, and heavy bin bags, and that the items were later found at the scene. The Daily Mail reported there was no evidence of sexual contact, and that Saceanu, a sex worker he contacted through a website on a burner phone, answered a text shortly after 9:30 p.m., drove to the Airbnb, and arrived about 10:20 p.m. Those are the prosecution's opening facts. Tuesday's plea means they will not be tested by a verdict.

The BBC reported the first day of trial heard that Day caused 78 knife wounds and then stopped trying to dismember the body because he cut himself. A Home Office pathologist said Saceanu, originally from Romania, probably died from wounds to her neck that damaged the carotid arteries, and that wounds to her hands were consistent with trying to protect herself, the BBC and the Daily Mail reported. Both outlets reported he left the Airbnb, called 999 at 12:50 a.m. on Dec. 21, and told officers his hand had been cut by a fox or a wild dog. The Daily Mail reported body-worn video showed the hand wrapped in duct tape, that he said the tape was in his car but could not say where the car was, and that he was arrested at 3:42 a.m. at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley, wearing a khaki top Brand said matched one worn by the character. The BBC reported defense barrister Gurdeep Garcha KC told the court Day knows "the nature and inevitability of the sentence that must follow" and asked for a pre-sentence report, citing his age and the absence of previous criminal offending. A report is information for the judge. It is not a reduction of the plea.

Murder in England and Wales carries a mandatory life sentence. What Dec. 4 decides is the minimum term Day must serve before he can be considered for parole, not whether he stays convicted. Roe said the guilty plea spared Saceanu's family a longer trial. Sparing a family the rest of the evidence is a reason prosecutors accept a plea at that stage. It is not the term. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Tuscaloosa police charged Daronte Collins with felony murder after a Saturday apartment-complex shooting.

WBRC's jail photo is captioned Daronte Collins and puts both men at 22. The Tuscaloosa Thread, citing Violent Crimes Unit Lt. Michael Hall, spells the charged man Deronte and puts both at 20. Patch and the Calhoun Journal also use Daronte and 20. A felony-murder count, which the Thread and the Journal describe as Alabama's rule when someone dies during a robbery, is not a finding that Collins fired the shot that killed Tyson. The Thread says the 25-year-old has not been charged.

High Point police charged Kymberli Bowden with first-degree murder in her 13-year-old daughter's death.

The Oct. 8 release is a new murder count on a case the department charged in 2025 as felony child abuse and concealment of death. It is not a trial. The murder-charge release says she remains in jail with no bond. WXII reported a violent-offense hold and a $1 million bond on the older counts. The 2025 release listed her age as 44. The murder-charge release, WXII, and FOX 35 Orlando list 45.

Chicago police charged Chevazz Campbell in the stabbing death of CTA janitor Julian Mobley.

A detention hearing is the first court date. It is not a finding that Campbell stabbed anyone. The department's Sunday release says he robbed and fatally stabbed a 41-year-old man in the 2000 block of West Lake Street. ABC7 and CBS Chicago name that man as Julian Mobley and describe a fare dispute that turned into a stabbing. The department's charge list and CBS Chicago's shorter summary do not match count for count.
