A jury's guilty verdicts are findings. They are not the sentence, and no sentencing date has been set. On Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, a Greene County jury convicted Brandon D. Peters of purposeful murder, felony murder, and felonious assault in the June 9, 2025 shooting death of Cievion Smith near June Drive in Fairborn. Jurors deliberated about three and a half hours. The Dayton Daily News reported that, as of Monday, Oct. 5, sentencing had not been scheduled. He faces 20 years to life.

The Greene County Prosecutor's Office said a jury found Brandon Peters guilty on Oct. 2, 2026, of purposeful murder, felony murder, and felonious assault after three and a half hours of deliberation, WKEF reported. WHIO reported the defendant as 39-year-old Brandon Peters and said the verdicts included two murder counts, felonious assault, and firearm specifications. The Dayton Daily News identified him as Brandon D. Peters, 39, of Clarksville, Tennessee, and reported a four-day trial with the verdict on Friday, Oct. 2. The same paper reported that as of Monday, Oct. 5, sentencing had not been scheduled, and that he faces up to 20 years to life. WKEF reported Greene County Prosecuting Attorney David D. Hayes said the state will ask for the maximum. A request for the maximum is an ask. It is not the term.

The Dayton Daily News, citing police and the prosecutor's office, reported that on June 9, 2025, about 10:38 p.m., Fairborn police went to Fairborn Apartments near June Drive and Williams Street for a report of gunfire and found 32-year-old Cievion Smith shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. WHIO and the Dayton Daily News reported surveillance from the complex showed a person in a black truck shoot Smith and drive away. Investigators used Flock cameras, determined the truck went south on Interstate 75, and identified Peters from registration information. WHIO reported police found him in Oak Grove, Kentucky, that he first refused to identify himself, and that he had the gun used in the shooting. WKEF reported he was located in Kentucky with that gun. Those are the investigative steps the outlets attributed to prosecutors and police. They are the record the jury heard. They are not the sentence.

WKEF reported Peters claimed he acted in self-defense and that the jury did not agree. The Dayton Daily News reported the prosecutor's office said Peters had made statements to officers and to other people about what led to the shooting, and that before trial he had not claimed self-defense. A rejected defense is part of why the verdicts came back guilty. It does not set the prison term. Hayes said the shooting grew out of an argument and that words alone do not justify deadly force, WKEF and the Dayton Daily News reported. He faces 20 years to life. Until a judge imposes a sentence, that range is exposure. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Tuscaloosa police charged Daronte Collins with felony murder after a Saturday apartment-complex shooting.

WBRC's jail photo is captioned Daronte Collins and puts both men at 22. The Tuscaloosa Thread, citing Violent Crimes Unit Lt. Michael Hall, spells the charged man Deronte and puts both at 20. Patch and the Calhoun Journal also use Daronte and 20. A felony-murder count, which the Thread and the Journal describe as Alabama's rule when someone dies during a robbery, is not a finding that Collins fired the shot that killed Tyson. The Thread says the 25-year-old has not been charged.

High Point police charged Kymberli Bowden with first-degree murder in her 13-year-old daughter's death.

The Oct. 8 release is a new murder count on a case the department charged in 2025 as felony child abuse and concealment of death. It is not a trial. The murder-charge release says she remains in jail with no bond. WXII reported a violent-offense hold and a $1 million bond on the older counts. The 2025 release listed her age as 44. The murder-charge release, WXII, and FOX 35 Orlando list 45.

Chicago police charged Chevazz Campbell in the stabbing death of CTA janitor Julian Mobley.

A detention hearing is the first court date. It is not a finding that Campbell stabbed anyone. The department's Sunday release says he robbed and fatally stabbed a 41-year-old man in the 2000 block of West Lake Street. ABC7 and CBS Chicago name that man as Julian Mobley and describe a fare dispute that turned into a stabbing. The department's charge list and CBS Chicago's shorter summary do not match count for count.
