These are charges, not a conviction. Wayne was first charged in late September with felony child endangerment causing serious injury; police upgraded the case after the baby died. Court documents described by KWQC say his accounts of what happened were inconsistent, and police say he was the child's sole caretaker at the time.

KWQC and WQAD reported on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, that Davenport police have charged Bryan R. Wayne, 22, with first-degree murder, child endangerment resulting in death, and neglect of a dependent person in the death of a 6-month-old child. KWQC reported Wayne is being held in the Scott County Jail on a $1,000,005 cash-only bond. A charge is an accusation. It is not a conviction.

According to WQAD, Davenport police, fire and medical crews were sent at 9:12 p.m. on Sept. 29 to a home in the 3500 block of Marquette Street for an unresponsive infant. The baby was taken to a hospital with a fractured skull and a brain bleed, and died Oct. 1 from the injuries. KWQC reported the child also had retinal hemorrhaging and brain swelling and had to be intubated.

KWQC reported that Wayne was originally charged in late September with felony child endangerment causing serious injury. According to a court affidavit cited by WQAD, Wayne told investigators he woke up at 9 p.m. and found the child was not breathing, and that the child had not been hurt when he went to sleep. Police said Wayne was the child's sole caretaker at the time.

KWQC reported that court documents say Wayne took photos of the baby before calling for help and sent them to other people, and that he made several phone calls about what happened in which his accounts were not consistent. Police said the investigation is ongoing. No plea or next court date was listed in the available reporting. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Broward cold-case detectives charged Brittany Hanfield and Sheila Arstil with murder in the 2007 killing of Leon Heron.

Thursday's announcement is the public account of two first-degree murder charges in a killing that sat unsolved for nearly 19 years. Detective David Towsley says the evidence includes DNA and confessions. That is his description of the file. A grand jury indictment of Arstil on Oct. 7, and Hanfield's arrest on Nov. 10, 2025, are charging steps. They are not a trial.

Police recovered a vehicle days after the crash and did not make an arrest then. The four counts are the charges on the Marshals release. A court has not tried them.
