A theft arrest of an elected party official is an accusation. It is not a conviction, and it is not a finding about how long the charges ran. Police have not said, in the accounts used here, how much money is at issue. The parish party's statement said it would wait on the court.
KLFY, citing the Arnaudville Police Department, reported that an investigation that began Oct. 9 ended with Hardy's arrest Oct. 12 on a theft charge tied to suspicious charges billed to an account held by the Knights of Columbus. He was taken to the St. Landry Parish Jail. KPLC, citing a release from Chief Josh Ross, reported he is 57 and that he serves as an elected member of the Republican State Central Committee and of the parish Republican Executive Committee. The station reported the committee's website listed him as vice chairman.
KPLC reported that the St. Martin Parish Republican Executive Committee said it was aware of the arrest, disappointed by the allegations, and would let the case proceed without further comment for now. Neither the police release nor the stations reported a dollar amount. A warrant and a booking put the accusation in court. They do not prove what was charged to the account.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
