South Wales Police charged Clifford Foster with murder in the death of Eleanor Barnfield.
The force said Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, that Foster, 61, of Bridgend, is charged in the death of Barnfield, 47, also of Bridgend, and is due at Newport Magistrates' Court on Friday. Its earlier update put a crash on Coity Road at about 12:43 p.m. Monday and said the driver had puncture wounds unrelated to the collision. BBC reported the Welsh Ambulance Service put that call at about 12:44 p.m.

Thursday is the charge. The force's Oct. 21 update was an arrest on suspicion, after a policing operation at Ger-y-Nant. BBC reported that arrest was Tuesday. The wound words are not shared. Police say puncture wounds unrelated to the collision. Wales Online says stab wounds in a crashed car. BBC says it understands the wounds were from a stabbing. A murder charge is the accusation.
South Wales Police said Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, that Clifford Foster, 61, of Bridgend, has been charged with murder in the death of Eleanor Barnfield, 47, of Bridgend. The force said he is due to appear at Newport Magistrates' Court on Friday, Oct. 23. Senior investigating officer Claire Lamerton said her thoughts were with Barnfield's loved ones, that they continue to be supported by specialist officers, that this is not being investigated as a domestic incident, and that she was asking the public not to speculate because court proceedings are now active. BBC, ITV News Wales and Wales Online reported that charge, that court date, and that statement. The force's public portal still carries the heading "Man arrested on suspicion of Murder" above the Oct. 22 paragraph that says he has been charged. A murder charge is what the Thursday update says he faces.
The account of Monday is the force's Oct. 21 update, and the outlets do not retell it the same way. Police said officers were called to Coity Road, Bridgend, at about 12:43 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, after a report of a collision in which a car had hit a wall. The update said officers found the driver had puncture wounds unrelated to the collision, that she was taken to hospital, and that she later died. It identified her as 47-year-old Eleanor Barnfield of Bridgend, who worked for Valleys to Coast. BBC reported the same puncture-wound finding and said it understands the wounds were sustained in a stabbing. BBC did not report a wall. Wales Online reported her body was found with stab wounds in a crashed car in the Coity Road area, and it placed the incident at a retirement flats complex there. ITV News Wales reported the charge and did not describe the crash. The clock is also split. The force's update says about 12:43 p.m. BBC, citing the Welsh Ambulance Service, says medics were called to the crash on Coity Road at about 12:44 p.m.
Where he was arrested, and what the ambulance service said about the rumors, are not in every story. The force's Oct. 21 update said a significant policing operation in the area of nearby Ger-y-Nant, a Valleys to Coast property, ended with a 61-year-old Bridgend man arrested on suspicion of murder and still in custody. It did not print Tuesday and did not print his name in that update. The name is in the Thursday charge. BBC reported the arrest was Tuesday at Ger-y-Nant, which it described as a sheltered complex of 13 flats for people over 60, a few minutes' drive from the Princess of Wales Hospital, with Coity Road between them. BBC reported the ambulance service said a response unit arrived seven minutes after the 12:44 p.m. call, that two emergency ambulances arrived at 1:07 p.m. and 1:13 p.m., and that advanced critical care came by helicopter before she was driven to hospital. BBC reported the service said it had been unable to identify any calls from Barnfield's phone numbers, that inquiries were continuing, and that rumors she had been driving herself to hospital because of ambulance waits were factually untrue. Those lines are the ambulance service, as BBC reported them. They are not in the police charge update.
The family wording and the employer's name are not printed the same way. The force's Oct. 21 update quoted the family: "Mum was the kindest, most loving bravest person in the world. She meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends. She was our rock." ITV News Wales reported the tribute, issued through police, as "kindest, most loving bravest person in the world," without "Mum was," and reported the same two sentences after it. Wales Online reported "Mum was the kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world," with a comma after loving that the police update does not have. BBC reported the family described her as the "kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world," with that comma, and did not print "Mum was." BBC reported Jo Oak, chief executive of Valleys to Coast, called her a "much-valued member" of the team and said the organization was devastated. Wales Online spelled the chief executive Joanne Oak and quoted her: "We are devastated by the tragic death of our colleague Eleanor Barnfield." The force's Oct. 21 update also quoted Chief Superintendent Jason Rees asking residents not to speculate online and thanking people who had been displaced. Thursday's charge notice did not repeat that quotation. The murder count is what South Wales Police said he is charged with. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Philip Ambrose pleaded not guilty to murder and guilty to manslaughter in the death of Michael Hayes.
The plea those outlets reported is an admission to manslaughter. It is not a sentence. The Leader says he is back on Oct. 30 so a sentencing date can be set. RTÉ and The Journal say next Friday, for a date for the sentence hearing, and do not print Oct. 30. The Leader is also the outlet that says the prosecution told the court the plea was acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
