Douglas County charged Daileon Maurice Thomas with intentional second-degree murder in the downtown Lawrence killing of Victor Gabriel Moreno.
The Lawrence Times and the Lawrence Journal-World reported the charge was filed Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, against Thomas, 23, of Olathe, in the death of Moreno, 23. Judge Pro Tem Gary West set bond at $500,000. KCTV had said Lawrence police suggested first-degree murder before that filing.

The count on the complaint is intentional second-degree murder, which the Lawrence Times calls a level-1 felony. It is the charge the district attorney filed. It is not the first-degree count police had suggested the day before. Bond after Wednesday's first appearance is $500,000. On Tuesday, before that appearance, the sheriff's office told the Times he was being held without bond.
Douglas County prosecutors on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, charged Daileon Maurice Thomas, 23, of Olathe, with intentional second-degree murder in the killing of Victor Gabriel Moreno, 23, the Lawrence Times and the Lawrence Journal-World reported. The Times called the count a level-1 felony, the high-severity grade. The Journal-World said the charge was filed Wednesday morning. KCTV's story, written when the arrest was still new and then updated, said detectives had suggested first-degree murder and that official charges had not yet been filed, then said he was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder. The Olathe Reporter, publishing Thursday, said court records showed the district attorney did not file the first-degree count police had suggested. A suggested count and a filed count are not the same paper.
The shooting was early Sunday, Oct. 18, in downtown Lawrence, and the clock in the accounts is the dispatch, the pronouncement, or both. The Lawrence Times said officers were sent to the parking lot on the west side of New Hampshire Street for a report of gunshots, found Moreno, and started aid until paramedics took over, and that he was pronounced dead at the scene. Its Tuesday arrest story put that dispatch at around 3 a.m. KCTV said officers were called around 3 a.m. to 7th and New Hampshire streets and found him in a nearby parking lot. The Journal-World said he was pronounced dead around 3 a.m. in a parking lot in the 700 block of New Hampshire Street. The 700 block is the block of 7th and New Hampshire. The Times and the Journal-World said he was of Lawrence. KCTV said his family, from Overland Park, mourned him in an interview Monday. A Lawrence address and an Overland Park family are both in those accounts. They are not a disagreement about who died.
The arrest time is shared. The charge name at the jail that night is not the charge that was filed. The Lawrence Times, citing a Lawrence Police Department social-media post, said police arrested Thomas around 8 p.m. Monday on suspicion of first-degree murder. KCTV said he was taken into custody just after 8 p.m. Monday and booked into the Douglas County Correctional Facility. The Journal-World said he was arrested without incident and booked Monday, and that investigators used public and private video, license-plate readers and witness accounts to find him. The Times said that as of Tuesday morning he did not appear on the jail's booking log, and that George Diepenbrock, a spokesperson for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, said he was being held without bond. The Journal-World said police have no evidence the two men knew each other before Sunday, and that investigators recovered the firearm they believe was used. KCTV and the Times also said police have no reason to believe they knew each other. The gun recovery is the Journal-World's detail. The other two stories do not print it.
Wednesday's first appearance is where the custody number changes. The Lawrence Times said Thomas appeared before Douglas County District Judge Pro Tem Gary West, who read the charge, appointed Lawrence defense attorney Branden Smith, and set bond at $500,000. The Times added its own reading of that figure: he would likely have to pay a bond agency $50,000 to get out while the case is pending. That is the paper's explanation of the bond. It is not a separate amount the judge ordered. The Times said West also ordered that Thomas not contact any witnesses who are not law enforcement, and that the next appearance is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, before Judge Stacey Donovan. The Journal-World reported the same $500,000 bond at the first appearance and the same next date, Oct. 27, without the hour or the judge's name. The Times is the account that names Senior Assistant District Attorney Eve Kemple as the prosecutor. KCTV said a first appearance had been scheduled for 3 p.m. The Olathe Reporter said Thursday morning that he was still held on $500,000. The same paper said court records showed he was on a one-year probation, running through December, in a domestic-battery case filed in May 2025 after a diversion in December 2025. That probation note is the Olathe Reporter. The Lawrence papers' stories of the murder charge do not include it. The person named in that older case is not named here. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff's officials named Edward Villa as the suspect after Katie Kinder, her son and her mother were found shot to death in Happy Valley.
Thursday's briefing names the three people and names Villa as the only suspect. The warrant was three counts of first-degree murder. He was found dead before an arrest. KPTV, citing Warrenton police, called it an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. KGW reported Detective Matt Lysaght would not go past a gunshot deputies heard, a firearm in the room, and the fact that no officer fired. KPTV and OPB call the motel the South Jetty Inn. The Oregonian calls it the South Jetty Motel.

An Oahu grand jury indicted Orion Satori on a second-degree murder charge in the Young Street stabbing of Kiril Stoimenov.
An indictment means a grand jury found enough to send the case forward. It is not a finding of guilt. Police have said Satori did the stabbing, according to Hawaii News Now. The next step is arraignment, where he will be asked to enter a plea. Second-degree murder in Hawaii carries a maximum of life with the possibility of parole, the station reported.
