Fresno police arrested an off-duty ICE agent after a 72-year-old man shot him during an alleged attack on a front lawn.
Fresno police said David Gonzalez, 32, a federal agent from Texas assigned to ICE, was found asleep on a woman's front lawn before 3:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, and appeared intoxicated when he allegedly attacked her 72-year-old father and then her. The father fired one shot that struck Gonzalez, who is in custody on felony assault charges, and police say the father will not be charged.

The arrest is an accusation against the agent, and the decision not to charge the homeowner is a police call on the facts they have so far. Police say the father feared for himself and his daughter and legally owned the gun. They also say they still do not know why an off-duty federal agent from Texas was asleep on a Fresno lawn at 3 a.m., and that question matters as much as anything the hospital chart says.
ABC News, quoting a Fresno Police Department statement, reported that a woman arrived home early Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, and found Gonzalez sleeping on her front lawn. She told her 72-year-old father, who lives with her, and he "went outside to send Gonzalez on his way," police said. When Gonzalez woke up, he "appeared intoxicated and agitated" and allegedly assaulted the father, police said. "When the victim's daughter tried to intervene on her father's behalf, Gonzalez physically attacked her, at which time she went to the ground," the department said. ABC30 Fresno reported the home is near Dudley and Broadway in central Fresno and that the call came before 3:30 a.m.
The father produced a gun and fired one shot, striking Gonzalez in the midsection, police said. The woman called her boyfriend, an off-duty police officer, who arrived and put Gonzalez in handcuffs, ABC News reported. Officers answering several 911 calls found Gonzalez handcuffed with a gunshot wound, and he was taken away by ambulance. ABC30 reported Friday that he was in serious condition. Police said the father is not facing charges "based on information established during the investigation," that he "feared for the physical safety of both himself and his daughter," and that he legally possessed the firearm. "It is unknown at this time why Gonzalez was in the area at the time of the incident, but it has been confirmed he was off-duty and alone at the time of the incident," police said. Police did not name the woman or her father.
ABC30 reported that Fresno City Councilmember Miguel Arias and another local official claimed ICE asked Fresno police to release Gonzalez from the hospital into ICE custody. Police Chief Mindy Casto told the station, "No such request was made. His supervisors are aware that he will stay in our custody." The department later said there was no confrontation with ICE and that agency officials had contacted police to begin a personnel investigation. Councilmember Mike Karbassi called on ICE to suspend its operations in the Central Valley, and protesters gathered Saturday along Blackstone Avenue outside River Park, ABC30 reported. ICE told ABC30 it cannot disclose or discuss its law enforcement operations. KMPH also reported the arrest.
ABC30 reported Sunday that hospital staff referred questions to police, and that Gonzalez's current condition and whether he remains in police custody were not immediately known. ABC News reported it was unclear whether he has an attorney. Felony assault is what police arrested him on, and no charging decision by prosecutors has been reported. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Chicago police charged Chevazz Campbell in the stabbing death of CTA janitor Julian Mobley.
A detention hearing is the first court date. It is not a finding that Campbell stabbed anyone. The department's Sunday release says he robbed and fatally stabbed a 41-year-old man in the 2000 block of West Lake Street. ABC7 and CBS Chicago name that man as Julian Mobley and describe a fare dispute that turned into a stabbing. The department's charge list and CBS Chicago's shorter summary do not match count for count.

Chicago police charged Gustavo Soto with first-degree murder in a Chicago Lawn stabbing.
The department's release is the charging document. It is not a finding that Soto stabbed his girlfriend, which is what the Chicago Sun-Times reported and what the release does not say. FOX 32, citing that release, puts the arrest at 1:19 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, three hours after the stabbing. That clock is Thursday night. The Sun-Times' Sunday story calls it Friday night. WGN says Thursday night and describes an argument. The department said no additional information was available.

Alvaro Pulido, Alex Saab's longtime business partner, is in U.S. custody in the Venezuela bribery case.
Custody is the start of a federal court case, not the end of one. Prosecutors allege Pulido and Alex Saab built a network of offshore shell companies to move bribes to allies of Nicolás Maduro in exchange for food, medicine and housing contracts. Saab has already pleaded guilty in a related case and agreed to cooperate. Saab's plea is his own admission, and the government still has to prove its case against Pulido.
