News24 reported four men appeared in Ventersdorp Magistrate's Court after the attack on Donovan Marx.

News24 named Phindile Alex Nomngcayi, 30, Thomas Thabo Motlhangtlhong, 27, Mothoka Godfrey Mathipa, 56, and Mokhema Jan Maishoane, 53, and reported a postponement to November 13 for bail, which the State will oppose. IOL and the Daily Mail, in earlier Tuesday copy, still had five suspects, ages 26 to 56, expected in the Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom courts on house robbery, attempted murder, and firearm charges. Those pages do not print the four names or November 13.

Four men in the dock, on News24, and five suspects expected in court, on IOL and the Daily Mail, are not the same appearance. Robbery with aggravating circumstances, on News24, and house robbery, on IOL and the Daily Mail, are not the same count. Four firearms linked to the attack, on News24, and two of four firearms linked, on IOL and the Daily Mail, are not the same seizure line. A first appearance and a postponement are not a verdict.

News24, in a story by Iavan Pijoos whose byline did not print a clock, reported that four of the five men arrested after a violent farm attack on Donovan Marx made their first appearance in the Ventersdorp Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. It named Phindile Alex Nomngcayi, 30, Thomas Thabo Motlhangtlhong, 27, Mothoka Godfrey Mathipa, 56, and Mokhema Jan Maishoane, 53. It reported they face charges of attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, assault, and possession of guns and ammunition, in what the State calls a "planned and premeditated offence." A bullet on the same page says the men are facing attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and illegal gun possession. Illegal gun possession, in that bullet, and possession of guns and ammunition, in the story, are not the same phrase. The bullet does not print the assault count. It reported Marx, 50, was shot, stabbed, and had both ears cut off at his Syferfontein farm near Ventersdorp in the North West last Wednesday. It reported the four men are also accused of assaulting farm worker Christopher Jinga, tying him up with cable ties while waiting for Marx to arrive, then dragging Marx into the house, ransacking the property, stealing three firearms from a safe, and fleeing in his bakkie. It reported the charge sheet says the men were found in possession of 222 live rounds of ammunition and several firearms, and that the court heard two firearms had their serial numbers filed off. It reported Mathipa was previously convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances in 1999 and was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment. It reported the case was postponed to 13 November for bail proceedings, during which the State will oppose the men's release.

The same News24 story reported that one of the suspects arrested will be a State witness, according to provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams. It reported Adams said consultations between the State and the investigating team took place before all five accused appeared in the Ventersdorp Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. It then reported Adams spoke following the appearance of the four other suspects, and that detectives indicated the man "wasn't actively involved in the commission of the crime," as much as he was "aware of what was happening – but that what he was aware of was also sketchy." It quoted Adams: "And that is not enough for the National Prosecuting Authority to put forward a strong case in relation to him." All five accused appeared, in that consultations sentence, and four of the five made their first appearance, in the bullet, are not the same count. The page does not print the fifth person's name. It reported Adams said police were confident they had gathered sufficient evidence from the attack on 28 October until the arrests, that the first two men were apprehended Saturday, and that three others were arrested the following day in Promosa near Potchefstroom. It reported that during Sunday's arrest police seized four firearms linked to Marx's attack, as well as clothing and jewellery. It reported AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel attended and called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare farm murders a priority crime, and that Kriel also called on him to publicly condemn the struggle song "Kill the Boer," which Kriel described as a chant that calls for ethnic violence against Afrikaners and farmers. Those sentences are Kriel, as News24 reported them. They are not counts.

IOL, in a story by Simon Majadibodu on a page whose URL is dated 2026-11-02 and which printed "Published 1 day ago" with no clock, reported North West police had arrested three more suspects after a violent farm robbery and attempted murder in Syferfontein, Ventersdorp, in which a 50-year-old farmer was shot and had his ears cut off, bringing the number arrested to five. It reported the three were arrested on Sunday in Promosa, near Potchefstroom, by Ventersdorp detectives supported by the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit. It quoted North West police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh: "During the operation, police seized four firearms, of which two are linked to the Ventersdorp incident, as well as clothing items and jewellery." Two of four linked, on IOL, and four firearms linked, on News24, are not the same seizure line. It reported North West Commissioner Lieutenant-General Arthur Peter Adams commended the team under Captain Bonita Dry. Lieutenant-General, on IOL, and Lieutenant General, on News24, are not the same hyphenation. Both pages print Arthur Peter Adams. It reported the five suspects, aged between 26 and 56, were expected to appear before the Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom Magistrate's Courts on Tuesday, facing house robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Aged between 26 and 56, on IOL, and the ages 27, 30, 53, and 56, on News24, are not the same ages. House robbery, on IOL, and robbery with aggravating circumstances, on News24, are not the same count. Expected to appear, on IOL, and made their first appearance, on News24, are not the same account. IOL does not print the four names, Christopher Jinga, a 1999 conviction, 222 rounds, November 13, or a State witness.

The Daily Mail, in a story by Isabella Machin published at 09:08 EDT on 3 November 2026 and updated at 09:11 EDT, reported five men had been arrested after Donovan Marx was shot, stabbed, brutally beaten, and had both his ears hacked off during a farm robbery at his home in Syferfontein, near Ventersdorp, last Wednesday. Hacked off, in the Daily Mail, and cut off, on News24 and IOL, are not the same verb. It reported three armed men wearing balaclavas confronted a farmworker who was mowing the lawn, demanded to know where the owner was, and tied his hands and feet with cable ties. Three armed men, in that Daily Mail account, is not a number News24 prints for the people in the dock. The Daily Mail does not print the farmworker's name. News24 prints Christopher Jinga. It reported that when 50-year-old Mr Marx arrived in his red Isuzu pick-up truck, two of the attackers shot him in the upper body, dragged him into the house, tied him up, and repeatedly stabbed and assaulted him. A caption on the same page says the attackers fled in Mr Marx's station wagon. A red Isuzu pick-up, and a station wagon, are not the same vehicle description. News24 says bakkie. It reported the farmworker freed himself, Marx was rushed to Mediclinic Potchefstroom in a serious condition, part of his large intestine was removed, surgeons were unable to save his ears, a bullet passed through one kidney and doctors saved the organ, and the family said he remained stable in intensive care. News24's court story does not print the hospital, the intestine, or the kidney. It reported two suspects were arrested in the Ventersdorp area on Saturday and three more in Promosa on Sunday, 1 November, and that officers seized four firearms, two of which have been linked to the attack. It reported the five, aged between 26 and 56, were expected to appear before the Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom Magistrates' Courts on Tuesday, 3 November, on charges including house robbery, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Expected, at 09:11 EDT, and the appearance News24 reported, are not the same procedural fact. The Daily Mail does not print November 13, the four names, or a State witness. It quoted Lieutenant General Arthur Adams commending the team under Captain Bonita Dry. Arthur Adams, in the Daily Mail, and Arthur Peter Adams, on News24 and IOL, are not the same name. It also quoted Ian Cameron, chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police, praising the arrests and saying the priority was a case that could withstand scrutiny in court, and it quoted Louise Marx thanking people for support. News24's court story does not print those Cameron or Louise Marx quotations. The counts and the postponement are what those pages report. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
