Thursday's charging papers are the accusation. They are not a conviction. KSHB reported MacDonald told police he shot a woman who was trying to break into the house. The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office, as KSHB relayed it, said witnesses described Heckman being shot as she announced she was leaving. Those are competing accounts in the charging record. A jury has not sorted them.
KSHB, KCTV, and KMBC reported that Jackson County prosecutors on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, charged Douglas MacDonald, 58, in the shooting death of Orian Heckman, 37. KSHB, citing court documents, said the counts are second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. KMBC described the lead count as second-degree felony murder and reported the same two armed-criminal-action counts. KCTV said Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson charged second-degree felony murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. A charge is the start of the case. It is not a finding that MacDonald killed Heckman.
KMBC reported Kansas City police were called just before 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 7 to a condemned house near Walnut Street and East Armour Boulevard. Officers found a woman who had been shot in the back of the head, behind a partially dislodged screen near a crawlspace to the basement, KMBC and KSHB reported. KSHB, citing court documents, said Heckman was taken to a hospital, declared brain dead on Oct. 9, and pronounced dead on Oct. 10. KCTV reported she was declared dead on Oct. 10. KSHB reported the property was condemned in February. KCTV reported it had been deemed uninhabitable earlier this year and that no one was permitted to be there.
KSHB reported MacDonald called police and said he had shot a woman who was trying to break into the house, and that drone video from the scene showed him standing outside. KMBC reported a suspect was taken into custody at the scene shortly after the shooting. KSHB reported that witness statements, as summarized in a Jackson County Prosecutor's Office release, said Heckman was shot "as she was announcing she was exiting the home." That is the prosecution's account of the witnesses. It is not MacDonald's account, and neither account has been tested at trial.
KCTV and KMBC reported a Jackson County judge set bond at $250,000 cash only. KSHB reported MacDonald is being held at the Jackson County Detention Center on that bond. No trial date was listed in the coverage used here. The murder count and the weapon counts remain accusations until a court enters a judgment. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Miami police arrested Jamar Lionel Jenkins on a second-degree murder charge in the 2025 killing of anti-gun activist Dwight Wells.
An arrest and a second-degree murder charge are accusations. They are not a conviction. Miami police said call records, a search of Jenkins's car and home, iCloud records, and ballistic links helped identify him. Reporting also said Wells was convicted in the 2004 murder of Jenkins's brother, and that investigators suspect a revenge motive. Those are police allegations and historical court records. A jury has not decided this case.

Federal prosecutors charged Rajahshuweh Rhodes, called "Skii Dot," in the 2021 Lower East Side killing of 16-year-old Isaiah Levine.
Five years after a 16-year-old was shot on a Lower East Side corner, the case is now federal, and that changes the stakes. Prosecutors charged Rhodes under racketeering law, alleging the shooting was gang business for the New York Blood Brim Army. Murder in aid of racketeering carries mandatory life or death. These are accusations in an indictment. Rhodes has not been tried, and he has not entered a plea that we could confirm.

Albany County prosecutors charged Khaliq Ibrahim and Jonathan Rampersad in the shooting death of Arell Agapito.
Thursday's arraignment is the first court appearance on the indictment that names both men. It is not a conviction. Ibrahim and Rampersad each pleaded not guilty. The allegation that they acted together, and that Ibrahim fired the shot inside Rampersad's apartment, is the prosecution's account of the indictment. CBS6's Oct. 5 story charged Ibrahim only.
