True Crime

A judge sentenced Eduardo Vazquez to 35 years to life for the murder of Johnny Ramirez.

San Diego Patch reported Oct. 9, 2026, in a City News Service dispatch, that Eduardo Vazquez, 28, was sentenced Wednesday to 35 years to life for first-degree murder in the July 24, 2022 killing of Johnny Ramirez, 41. Co-defendant Arturo Diaz, 28, was sentenced to 19 years after a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter. Hoodline spelled Vazquez's last name Vasquez.

Thirty-five years to life is the sentence on a first-degree murder conviction. Nineteen years is the sentence on Diaz's voluntary-manslaughter plea, after jurors could not reach a verdict on the homicide count. A hung jury is not an acquittal, and a manslaughter plea is not a murder verdict. Patch reported prosecutors allege both men were gang members and that the killing was gang-motivated. That allegation is not a separate sentence in the Patch account.

San Diego Patch reported Oct. 9, 2026, that a man convicted of shooting a homeless man in Linda Vista was sentenced Wednesday to 35 years to life in state prison. The dispatch, from City News Service, named him Eduardo Vazquez, 28. It reported he was convicted of first-degree murder for the July 24, 2022 killing of Johnny Ramirez, 41. It reported Ramirez was found shot in the back just after 5 a.m. in the 2200 block of Ulric Street and died at the scene. Hoodline, in an Oct. 7 story, spelled the name Eduardo Vasquez and reported the same 35-years-to-life sentence for first-degree murder. This account uses Vazquez, the spelling in the Patch and City News Service story.

Patch reported Vazquez and co-defendant Arturo Diaz were not arrested until more than a year after the homicide. It reported prosecutors allege the defendants were gang members and that Ramirez's killing was gang-motivated. Hoodline reported the same gang allegation. The murder conviction is the verdict on Vazquez. The gang claim, in both stories, is what prosecutors allege.

Diaz's case ended on a different count. Patch reported Diaz, also 28, went on trial for the homicide, that jurors could not reach verdicts, and that he later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 19 years in state prison. Hoodline reported the same hung jury, the same plea, and the same 19-year term. A voluntary-manslaughter plea is a conviction for that offense. It is not a first-degree murder verdict.

The block is consistent. The cross street is not. Patch reported the 2200 block of Ulric Street and named no cross street. Hoodline reported that one account placed the shooting on Ulric Street near Comstock Street and that another placed it on Ulric Street near Burroughs Street. Hoodline called that split unresolved. The prison terms are the sentences those outlets reported. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Shots were fired into Bakersfield's KBAK and KBFX studio on Friday and again early Tuesday.

This is an open shooting investigation with no named suspect and no charge. Ten rounds into a conference room and an office are tied to Friday night. Tuesday is a second burst of gunfire at the same building, and police have not said it was the same person. The station's own first write-up dated Friday as Oct. 12. Oct. 12 was a Monday. The updated station story dates Friday as Oct. 9. That date is the one that matches the calendar.

Damon Foy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of Alberta Dale.

The plea is a conviction for second-degree murder. It is not the sentence. The Daily Freeman reported Foy is to receive 23 years to life, two years under the 25-years-to-life maximum, and that Chief Assistant District Attorney Liz Culmone-Mills said the office would not make that recommendation without Dale's family. Fox News reported the same expected term, citing the Daily Freeman. Sentencing is set before Judge Bryan E. Rounds on Dec. 16.

A judge dismissed George Crater's murder conviction, and he was booked again on the same charge.

The April jury verdict was a conviction. The dismissal without prejudice erased it and let prosecutors file again. azfamily reported the new charge is first-degree murder, that Crater was arrested Wednesday, and that he is due back in court next week. ABC15 reported the bond is $1 million cash only. A refiled charge is not a new conviction.
