Five people died in a crash between a Memphis police patrol car and another vehicle at Hickory Hill Road and Raines Road.

The Memphis Police Department said that at about 12:26 a.m. on Oct. 11, 2026, officers answering a call about a person reportedly shot near Flowering Peach Drive and Mendenhall Road collided with another vehicle at Hickory Hill Road and Raines Road. Five of the six people in the other vehicle died. The two officers have been released from the hospital. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating. No one has been charged.

This is an emergency-response crash with five deaths, and the facts that would decide fault are not out. The department, FOX13 Memphis, and Action News 5 do not even use the same words for the call the officers were answering. Speed, lights, sirens, and the right of way are not in the release. FOX13 says it has surveillance video. Action News 5 says it has asked the Tennessee Highway Patrol for the crash report. Questions from people who live nearby are not findings. A report that is not released yet is not a conclusion.

The Memphis Police Department said that on Oct. 11, 2026, at approximately 12:26 a.m., officers responding to a call about a person who had reportedly been shot near Flowering Peach Drive and Mendenhall Road were involved in a collision with another vehicle at Hickory Hill Road and Raines Road. The department said both officers and two occupants of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital in critical condition, that one of those occupants later died, and that four other occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. The department said the Tennessee Highway Patrol was contacted to investigate the crash and that more information would be released when it is available. FOX13 Memphis reported the collision was shortly after 12:25 a.m. and that, according to Memphis police, a patrol vehicle and a civilian vehicle collided. Action News 5 reported a two-car crash at Hickory Hill and East Raines, one vehicle carrying two officers and the other carrying six people. The counts match. Five people in the civilian vehicle died. One person from that vehicle was still in critical condition in the accounts used here.

The outlets do not describe the call the same way. The department's release says a person reportedly shot. FOX13 reported the officers were responding to a homicide call near Flowering Peach and Mendenhall. Action News 5 reported police said the officers were responding to a man-down call. Those are three descriptions of one dispatch. They are not interchangeable, and none of them says how fast either vehicle was going. FOX13 reported that as of Monday the two officers had been released, and it attributed that to Memphis police. Action News 5 reported the officers were taken in critical condition and released several hours later, and in a later story reported they have since been released. FOX13 reported the Highway Patrol investigation is standard when Memphis officers are in a serious crash, and it reported the station obtained surveillance video of the crash. This account does not describe that video. FOX13 reported authorities had not released the names of the people who died. Action News 5 reported the crash happened next to Zion CME Church in Hickory Hill. Memphis Mayor Paul Young said, in a statement Action News 5 and FOX13 both published: "Five young people lost their lives last night, and their families, along with the families of others involved, are facing unimaginable grief today. My deepest prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragedy. I ask Memphis to keep these families in our thoughts as they face the difficult days ahead."

Names in the coverage come from families and from sources, not from a department list. Action News 5 reported two of the five people killed have been identified as 20-year-old Rodney McNeal and 21-year-old Syria Fifer, and reported sources identified McNeal on Monday morning. The station quoted Cory Robinson, McNeal's former football coach at Hamilton High School, who said he came to think of McNeal as family and described him as someone who was "always in good spirits, smiling and laughing." Action News 5 reported Fifer's family set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses. The station reported a vigil for McNeal at the crash site at 5 p.m. Monday, and another Tuesday night for Fifer and two other people the station said had not been identified. WREG reported family members identified 22-year-old Messiah Lee and 21-year-old Syria Fifer, according to an aunt and mothers, and reported police had not confirmed that information. WREG reported Lee had just received a nursing degree. Action News 5's identifications and WREG's identifications overlap on Fifer and do not overlap on McNeal and Lee. FOX13 reported authorities had not released names. Action News 5 reported it asked the Tennessee Highway Patrol for the fatal crash report and for the ages and identities of everyone involved.

What that report would have to answer is still open. No story used here gives a speed for either vehicle. No story says whether the patrol car's lights or siren were on. No story says who had the green light or the right of way. No story assigns fault. No story reports a charge against either officer or against anyone in the other vehicle. FOX13 quoted residents who wondered about the hour and about whether the officers could have reacted differently, and those residents said they did not know who was wrong. That is neighborhood reaction. It is not the Highway Patrol reconstruction. Until that agency releases the crash report, the public record is the death toll, the hospital status, and a dispatch the outlets are still describing in different words. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

True Crime

Kelly Day was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Larry Young, and a judge ordered her held pending trial.

The prosecution's account and Day's account are both in the Tribune's report of a Saturday bond-court hearing, and they do not say the same thing. Prosecutors say she told her wife she would not let "bullies" get away with laughing about her gender, then followed Young and stabbed him. She told investigators it was self-defense. Gas-station video and two 911 calls are what that hearing treated as the record. An order to hold her pending trial is not a finding that either account is true.

Matthew Chambers and Meaghan Herrod were each charged with two counts of murder after an RV fire killed their two children.

A murder charge filed two months after a fire is the accusation. Cleveland Fire Chief Sean Anderson has said the parents were "in the area of the fire at the time," and he has not described a theory. Houston Public Media reported a fire marshal's spokesperson used the words "felony murder." ABC13 reported "murder." The affidavit that would have to spell out an act, an omission, or something else is not in these stories. A 2016 endangerment plea and a CPS history are background. They are not proof of this charge.

Saratoga Springs police charged David Cruz Torres with attempted murder after a coworker was cut in the car.

Attempted murder in the second degree and fourth-degree weapon possession are the counts police announced. They are not a finding that Cruz Torres cut his coworker. WRGB is the station that labels those counts a Class B felony and a Class A misdemeanor. Fox News, WRGB, and WNYT all say he was held for an Oct. 10 arraignment in Saratoga Springs City Court. The woman has not been named.
