Second-degree murder is the charge the release says was filed Nov. 2 in Moncton Provincial Court. A charge filed that morning is not a finding that Jean-Francois Marcil killed Roger Maillet. Remanded into custody, and a return date of Nov. 9, are not a sentence. The release spells him Jean-Francois, with no accent on Francois.

The New Brunswick RCMP said in a release dated November 2, 2026, from Moncton, New Brunswick, that a 73-year-old man from Moncton has been charged in connection with a homicide investigation in Moncton. It said that on November 1, 2026, at approximately 9 a.m., members of the Codiac Regional RCMP responded to a report of an assault at a residence on MacAleese Lane in Moncton. It said that upon arrival police located a 63-year-old man, Roger Maillet, critically injured inside the residence, that he was transported to hospital, and that he later died as a result of his injuries. It said a 73-year-old man from Moncton was arrested at the scene without incident and remained in police custody. The release does not describe the assault beyond those sentences. It does not say how the two men knew each other.

The release said that on November 2, 2026, 73-year-old Jean-Francois Marcil appeared in Moncton Provincial Court and was charged with second-degree murder.
