This is the shooting the capital's Guard patrols were sent to prevent, and it ended with one soldier hit in the leg and the suspect shot in the abdomen. Police say he kept firing as he ran. The charges are assault and gun counts, not attempted murder, at least for now. The other half of this case is the Guard's own gunfire, which Internal Affairs and the U.S. Attorney's Office will review on their own track.
The Metropolitan Police Department said Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, that 41-year-old Jerrell Jackson, of Southeast D.C., was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (gun), assault on a police officer and emergency personnel, carrying a pistol without a license, and felon in possession of a firearm. The charges stem from a shooting at about 11:10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, in the 400 block of 8th Street SE, police said. 7News WJLA reported that D.C. police identified him Monday afternoon. Fox News reported that the U.S. Marshals Service also identified Jackson as the suspect.
According to MPD, National Guard members assigned to patrol the Barracks Row corridor saw a fight outside an establishment and tried to stop it. Police said the suspect, who was involved in the fight, brandished a firearm and began shooting. The Guard members ordered him to drop the gun, and police said he tried to flee while firing toward them, striking one Guard member. Three Guard members fired at the suspect and hit him, MPD said. He was detained and held until officers arrived. WJLA reported the Guard members had been sitting in a van when they saw the fight and got out to intervene.
Police said the Guard member and the suspect were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Fox News reported the Guard member was shot in the leg and has been released from the hospital, and that Jackson was struck in the abdomen. A spokesperson for the D.C. Joint Task Force also said the Guard member had been released, WJLA reported. MPD said the suspect's gun was recovered at the scene. Fox News reported investigators found it in an alley next to the scene along with at least 14 shell casings. The Marshals Service and the Guard have not identified the wounded soldier, Fox News reported.
Fox News reported the Marshals Service said Jackson was previously convicted of two counts of assault of a police officer and one count of carrying a pistol without a license, and had three parole violations. Fox News also reported that White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis said, "We are praying this National Guard member has a quick and speedy recovery." MPD said its Internal Affairs Bureau Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District, is investigating the Guard members' gunfire, and that the U.S. Attorney's Office will independently review the facts. A court date and the name of an attorney for Jackson had not been reported Monday. Prior convictions are not proof of the new charges. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff's officials named Edward Villa as the suspect after Katie Kinder, her son and her mother were found shot to death in Happy Valley.
Thursday's briefing names the three people and names Villa as the only suspect. The warrant was three counts of first-degree murder. He was found dead before an arrest. KPTV, citing Warrenton police, called it an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. KGW reported Detective Matt Lysaght would not go past a gunshot deputies heard, a firearm in the room, and the fact that no officer fired. KPTV and OPB call the motel the South Jetty Inn. An Oahu grand jury indicted Orion Satori on a second-degree murder charge in the Young Street stabbing of Kiril Stoimenov.
An indictment means a grand jury found enough to send the case forward. It is not a finding of guilt. Police have said Satori did the stabbing, according to Hawaii News Now. The next step is arraignment, where he will be asked to enter a plea. Second-degree murder in Hawaii carries a maximum of life with the possibility of parole, the station reported.
