San Juan County charges Jess Patterson with first-degree murder in the death of Lauren Patterson.

KSJE reports that the San Juan County Sheriff's Office says Jess Patterson is arrested on a charge of murder in the first degree, open count, after Lauren Patterson, 36, is found dead Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, at the couple's Kirtland home. The Tri-City Record reports he is 34, that a pretrial-detention motion is filed, and that a hearing is set for 9 a.m. Oct. 22 in Aztec.

An open-count first-degree murder charge is the accusation in the warrant. It is not a finding about what a phone video shows, and a detective's description of that video is not a plea. The Tri-City Record reports the district attorney files a motion for a pretrial detention hold. That request is set for Oct. 22. The warrant is the charge.

KSJE publishes a San Juan County Sheriff's Office account dated Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026. The sheriff's office says that on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 4, a 17-year-old calls 911 about his mother, Lauren Patterson, 36, who is not breathing and is unconscious. Deputies find her dead at the scene. The office says detectives learn her husband, Jess Patterson, previously lived in California and was arrested at least six times there for domestic violence, and that he was arrested in July 2026 in New Mexico for battering her. An autopsy, the office says, finds multiple broken bones, bruising, and internal injuries. A charge built on that investigation is still a charge.

The sheriff's office says investigators get a search warrant for his phone and find a video of Lauren Patterson's final moments that includes him standing on her chest. The office says an arrest warrant is obtained for murder in the first degree, open count, and that he is arrested and held at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center. The Tri-City Record reports Jess Patterson, 34, of Kirtland, is charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 4 death of Lauren Patterson, 36, his wife of 17 years, and that deputies are called to the home on County Road 6335. The paper reports the autopsy finds she dies of "blunt force trauma," with "numerous rib fractures and a ruptured spleen which began to bleed internally." Those are the medical findings the paper attributes to the autopsy. They are not a verdict.

The Tri-City Record, citing the affidavit for the arrest warrant, reports the video shows Patterson "placing his entire weight" on Lauren's chest, "singing and taunting her while she gasped for breaths." The paper reports that in the video he says "she's dead," calls her a "skateboard" while still singing, and, when she "appears unconscious and unresponsive," says "goodnight" and walks away. Those lines are what the affidavit says the recording contains. They have not been played in a trial. The paper reports the district attorney files a motion for a pretrial detention hold and states that "no viable conditions of release exist to ensure the safety of the community at this time," citing prior arrests and convictions. The same article describes at least six prior arrests and possible convictions for domestic abuse out of California. The sheriff's office describes arrests, not convictions. A July 14 battery charge is a separate accusation: the paper reports he is charged with battery on a household member for allegedly hitting Lauren in the face.

The Tri-City Record reports the affidavit says the autopsy also finds a broken arm that "naturally healed," and that Lauren's sister, Alexandria Peterson, tells police Patterson "had beaten Lauren with a baton." The paper reports her mother, Robin Peterson, tells investigators she believes he "moved the family to New Mexico to isolate the abuse," and that neighbors tell investigators they can "hear him beating her." Family statements and neighbor accounts in an affidavit are allegations investigators write down. A pretrial detention hearing and a preliminary hearing are set for 9 a.m. Oct. 22 before 11th Judicial District Judge Curtis Gurley in Aztec, the paper reports. The 17-year-old who calls 911 is not named here. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Tuscaloosa police charged Daronte Collins with felony murder after a Saturday apartment-complex shooting.

WBRC's jail photo is captioned Daronte Collins and puts both men at 22. The Tuscaloosa Thread, citing Violent Crimes Unit Lt. Michael Hall, spells the charged man Deronte and puts both at 20. Patch and the Calhoun Journal also use Daronte and 20. A felony-murder count, which the Thread and the Journal describe as Alabama's rule when someone dies during a robbery, is not a finding that Collins fired the shot that killed Tyson. The Thread says the 25-year-old has not been charged.

High Point police charged Kymberli Bowden with first-degree murder in her 13-year-old daughter's death.

The Oct. 8 release is a new murder count on a case the department charged in 2025 as felony child abuse and concealment of death. It is not a trial. The murder-charge release says she remains in jail with no bond. WXII reported a violent-offense hold and a $1 million bond on the older counts. The 2025 release listed her age as 44. The murder-charge release, WXII, and FOX 35 Orlando list 45.

Chicago police charged Chevazz Campbell in the stabbing death of CTA janitor Julian Mobley.

A detention hearing is the first court date. It is not a finding that Campbell stabbed anyone. The department's Sunday release says he robbed and fatally stabbed a 41-year-old man in the 2000 block of West Lake Street. ABC7 and CBS Chicago name that man as Julian Mobley and describe a fare dispute that turned into a stabbing. The department's charge list and CBS Chicago's shorter summary do not match count for count.
