A second-degree murder verdict is the jury's finding on the charge that was tried. It is not a sentence. The district attorney said the jury returned the verdict Saturday after a weeklong trial, and the office announced it Oct. 5, 2026. What the judge will impose is still ahead.
The district attorney's office said Memphis police were called at about 1:50 a.m. on Oct. 8, 2023, to the parking lot in front of 1740 Germantown Parkway and found Farris with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Regional One Hospital and pronounced dead. Action News 5 placed the lot outside Xperience Kitchen & Cocktails. The office said witnesses told police the lot was crowded after a nearby club let out. Investigators later developed Sykes as a suspect, and multiple witnesses identified him in photographic lineups. WREG reported the same identification and the same pending sentencing date.
Associate Deputy District Attorney Monica Timmerman and Assistant District Attorney Shaun Schielke prosecuted the case, the office said. The jury found Sykes guilty as charged of second-degree murder. A sentencing date is forthcoming. A guilty verdict on the charged count is the finding. The punishment is a later hearing.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Randal Moon Jr. was sentenced to 86 years in the Delaware County killing of Michael D. Greer. Ameariss Aponte and Amy Singhas are still charged.
Moon's sentence is the judgment on his conviction. It is not a finding against the co-defendants who have not been tried. WISH-TV reported forensic evidence showed Greer was still alive when the car was set on fire. That evidence was part of the case the jury heard against Moon. Aponte's trial was postponed. Singhas is set for Nov. 16.

A DuPage County judge ordered Chance Jamerson held on attempted armed-robbery charges in the Oakbrook Center shooting.
A detention order is a custody ruling. It is not a conviction. Prosecutors say Jamerson set up a robbery of people who brought about $2,000 to buy Swatch watches, and that Hill was shot with his own gun during a struggle. Berlin said Illinois law treats that shooting as justified force against a forcible felony. That is the state's position. A jury has not heard the case.

Craig Jones pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the shooting death of Ricky Arroyo outside a Holyoke Boys and Girls Club.
A not-guilty plea is the defendant's answer to the charges. It is not a finding. Western Mass News reported Jones is charged with first-degree murder and three firearm counts. He is due back Nov. 13. The Hampden District Attorney's office is investigating.
