The floor is 38 years because the felony-firearm term sits on top of the murder minimum, not beside it. Judge Christine A. Morse gave Powell 36 to 55 years for second-degree murder, and the gun counts add two years that have to be served on top of that term. The other prison sentences run at the same time. He shot through a door during an argument and hit Tyquincy McFerrin on the other side. That is the version the jury accepted on Sept. 25.
John Powell Jr., 44, was sentenced Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, to 36 to 55 years in prison for second-degree murder in the 2023 shooting death of Tyquincy Tymain McFerrin, 42, MLive, WZZM 13, and WWMT reported. Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge Christine A. Morse imposed the sentence, MLive reported. MLive reported he also received 36 to 55 years for discharging a firearm into a building causing death and 25 to 50 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm, and that Kalamazoo County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Jeff Williams said those sentences run concurrently with the murder term. WZZM 13 reported the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said Powell was sentenced to two years for felony firearm and that every other sentence runs concurrently with the murder sentence and that gun term. MLive reported the two years cover three felony-firearm counts and run consecutive to the other sentences. Added to the 36-year minimum, that is the sentence MLive described as at least 38 years.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said a jury convicted Powell on Sept. 25, 2026, of second-degree murder, three counts of felony firearm, felon in possession of a weapon, and discharging a weapon at a building causing death. McFerrin was shot and killed on May 18, 2023, in the 1400 block of Fox Ridge Drive at Fox Ridge Apartments, after a verbal argument with Powell, the department and WWMT reported. During the argument, Powell fired through an apartment door and struck McFerrin, who was on the other side, the department said. McFerrin died of his injuries despite lifesaving efforts, WZZM 13 and the department reported.
Powell was taken into custody several months after the shooting in Lake County, Illinois, the department, MLive, and WWMT reported. After the September verdict, Captain Danielle Guilds of the department's Criminal Investigations Division said detectives and prosecutors had stayed with a long case, and that she hoped the verdict brought some measure of closure to McFerrin's family. Monday's hearing imposed the prison terms on those convictions. Powell can appeal the conviction and the sentence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

KPTV, citing Warrenton police, called it an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. An Oahu grand jury indicted Orion Satori on a second-degree murder charge in the Young Street stabbing of Kiril Stoimenov.
An indictment means a grand jury found enough to send the case forward. It is not a finding of guilt. Police have said Satori did the stabbing, according to Hawaii News Now. The next step is arraignment, where he will be asked to enter a plea. Second-degree murder in Hawaii carries a maximum of life with the possibility of parole, the station reported.
