Bridgeport police charged Jorge Luis Ortiz with murder in the daylight shooting of Nelson Batista.

Ortiz, 57, was arrested Sunday night, Oct. 18, 2026, on the city's East Side in the Oct. 12 death of Nelson Manuel Batista, 48, and a judge raised his bond to $5 million with a next date of Nov. 3, FOX61, News 12 Connecticut and Patch reported. He had finished a 30-year sentence on a 1992 murder conviction.

Fox News placed the foot chase on Monday, while FOX61, News 12 Connecticut and Patch placed the arrest on Sunday night and the arraignment on Monday, when News 12 reported the bond went from $2.5 million to $5 million with 30 percent required in cash. News 12 calls the 1992 case a murder conviction, and Fox calls it felony murder, and neither account describes that killing. The 1992 conviction is a closed case, and this warrant still has to be proved on its own.

Bridgeport police arrested Jorge Luis Ortiz, 57, on Sunday night, Oct. 18, 2026, while he was walking on the city's East Side, FOX61, News 12 Connecticut and Patch reported. Patch, citing police, reported he tried to get away from a patrol officer and was caught quickly, and that he had no gun on him. He was wanted on a warrant in the Oct. 12 shooting of Nelson Manuel Batista, 48. News 12 reported the charges as murder, criminal possession of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit. Fox News, in a story published Wednesday, used "criminal possession of a pistol" for the middle count and described the arrest as a brief foot chase on Monday. The local reports put the arrest on Sunday night and the court appearance on Monday.

News 12, citing the warrant, reported that shortly before 9 a.m. on Oct. 12, cameras near Cottage Street and Park Avenue recorded Ortiz walking south on Park Avenue with a woman who "appears to be trying to walk away from Ortiz." Batista turned his SUV from Park Avenue onto Cottage Street, and Ortiz put his hands on the passenger side, the warrant says. Batista stopped, got out and walked toward Ortiz, who was "already in a fighting stance" and punched him in the head, News 12 reported. The two went to the ground, scuffled for about 45 seconds, and Batista was shot in the chest. Fox News reported the city's ShotSpotter system logged at least two gunshots and that the medical examiner found one round had struck Batista in the chest. He was pronounced dead at St. Vincent's Medical Center, Patch reported. A driver recorded the moments after the shots, including Ortiz getting to his feet and striking Batista in the head with a gun before running off, News 12 and Fox News reported. The woman in the warrant is not named, and these accounts do not say she was hurt.

News 12 reported a Bridgeport task force detective recognized Ortiz in a still from that video as a man police had dealt with as recently as March, when he was arrested on a first-offense drug possession charge that is still pending. Fox reported the same March case as a pending misdemeanor drug arrest. News 12 reported that someone who knows Ortiz contacted police after seeing the video online. Police Chief Roderick Porter said Ortiz and Batista were strangers. "This was a random act," he told reporters at the Monday briefing, Fox News reported, hours before Batista's own funeral. Patch reported police scheduled that funeral for Monday night and counted Batista as the city's eighth homicide victim this year. On the family Fox described, the accounts diverge. Fox News reported Batista had buried his 25-year-old son, Air Force senior airman Pierce Batista, and that an online obituary put the son's funeral on Oct. 3 in Louisiana. Fox also reported Batista was a father of six and a grandfather of three. People, citing the Connecticut Post, reported that Pierce Anthony Batista died Sept. 25 in Fairfield, California, and that Batista's sister, Wisleidis Cruz, said he had three daughters. Those family details are outside the warrant.

News 12 reported Ortiz was arrested on a murder charge in 1989, convicted in 1992 and sentenced to 30 years, and that he was off probation and parole when Batista was shot. Fox described that 1992 case as a felony murder conviction with the same 30-year sentence. Patch and FOX61 reported bond was $2.5 million before the arraignment. News 12 reported that on Monday afternoon a judge doubled it to $5 million and required 30 percent in cash, and set the next appearance for Nov. 3. The 1992 case ended in a conviction. The Bridgeport charges filed this month are a new accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff's officials named Edward Villa as the suspect after Katie Kinder, her son and her mother were found shot to death in Happy Valley.

Thursday's briefing names the three people and names Villa as the only suspect. The warrant was three counts of first-degree murder. He was found dead before an arrest. KPTV, citing Warrenton police, called it an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. KGW reported Detective Matt Lysaght would not go past a gunshot deputies heard, a firearm in the room, and the fact that no officer fired. KPTV and OPB call the motel the South Jetty Inn. The Oregonian calls it the South Jetty Motel.

An Oahu grand jury indicted Orion Satori on a second-degree murder charge in the Young Street stabbing of Kiril Stoimenov.

An indictment means a grand jury found enough to send the case forward. It is not a finding of guilt. Police have said Satori did the stabbing, according to Hawaii News Now. The next step is arraignment, where he will be asked to enter a plea. Second-degree murder in Hawaii carries a maximum of life with the possibility of parole, the station reported.
