Jose Antonio Zayas was charged with murder in the shooting of Culver CityBus driver Bruce Rodriguez.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, that Jose Antonio Zayas, 55, was charged Tuesday with murder, a special-circumstance allegation that the victim was transportation personnel, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Bruce Rodriguez, 42, was shot Oct. 1 on a bus in Mar Vista. Arraignment is Nov. 5. Zayas is held without bail.

A special-circumstance allegation is the count that can turn a California murder charge into life without parole if a jury finds it true. It is still an allegation. The district attorney's account of why the bus did not stop and the witness account CBS Los Angeles reported do not describe the argument the same way. A Friday booking bail and Wednesday's no-bail hold are two different custody decisions. Neither one is a verdict.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, that Jose Antonio Zayas, 55, of Los Angeles, was charged Tuesday in case 26CJCF06371 with one count of murder, a special-circumstance allegation of murder of transportation personnel, a special allegation that he personally used a firearm, and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The office said he made an initial appearance Tuesday and that arraignment was continued to Nov. 5 in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. He is being held on no bail. NBC Los Angeles, citing the complaint, reported the murder count alleges he knew or reasonably should have known that the victim was a bus operator killed while doing his job, and that he personally used and discharged a handgun. If convicted as charged, the district attorney's office said, he faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole. A special circumstance is what the complaint asks a jury to find. It is not a finding yet.
The district attorney's office said that on Oct. 1, at about 5 p.m., Zayas boarded a Culver CityBus driven by Bruce Rodriguez, 42, asked him to stop so he could get off, and that Rodriguez could not, because of heavy traffic and where the bus sat on South Centinela Avenue. The office said Zayas then allegedly fired a handgun multiple times, killing Rodriguez, took his bicycle from the rack on the front of the bus, and fled, and that he was found and arrested the next day. NBC Los Angeles reported the same sequence from prosecutors and said Los Angeles police found Rodriguez unresponsive in the driver's seat near Centinela Avenue and Washington Boulevard. CBS Los Angeles reported a different account of the argument: witnesses told police that Zayas argued with Rodriguez about missing a turn, then pulled a gun from a backpack, and that four people were on the bus. NBC Los Angeles also reported that police said the shooting may have happened over a missed stop. Those are three descriptions of the same few minutes. A charging narrative, a witness summary, and a police theory are not the same thing, and a jury would hear which one the witnesses actually give.
The arrest and the hold are not the same step. NBC Los Angeles, citing the Los Angeles Police Department, reported Zayas was arrested without incident shortly after 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, by the Gang and Narcotics Division FBI Task Force in the 3900 block of Motor Avenue, near Washington Boulevard. CBS Los Angeles reported the arrest location as the 3600 block of Motor Avenue. FOX 11 Los Angeles reported that at booking he was held on $3 million bail. The district attorney's office said Wednesday he is now held on no bail. A bail figure set at booking can change when a complaint is filed. The change is a custody decision. It does not decide the special circumstance.
Deputy District Attorney Alexander Bott of the Major Crimes Division is prosecuting the case, and the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division is still investigating, the district attorney's office said. District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said Rodriguez "was a valued colleague, a beloved father and husband who was tragically killed by a passenger aboard his bus," and that people relied on him to get where they needed to go. NBC Los Angeles reported Rodriguez is survived by his wife, Sandy Sanchez, and their two young sons, and that Sanchez said he had driven for the city of Culver City for 12 years. CBS Los Angeles reported Culver City suspended bus service through the weekend after the shooting. NBC Los Angeles reported Hochman, Councilwoman Traci Park, and Police Chief Jim McDonnell were expected at a City Hall news conference Wednesday afternoon. A news conference is an announcement. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Tuscaloosa police charged Daronte Collins with felony murder after a Saturday apartment-complex shooting.
WBRC's jail photo is captioned Daronte Collins and puts both men at 22. The Tuscaloosa Thread, citing Violent Crimes Unit Lt. Michael Hall, spells the charged man Deronte and puts both at 20. Patch and the Calhoun Journal also use Daronte and 20. A felony-murder count, which the Thread and the Journal describe as Alabama's rule when someone dies during a robbery, is not a finding that Collins fired the shot that killed Tyson. The Thread says the 25-year-old has not been charged.

High Point police charged Kymberli Bowden with first-degree murder in her 13-year-old daughter's death.
The Oct. 8 release is a new murder count on a case the department charged in 2025 as felony child abuse and concealment of death. It is not a trial. The murder-charge release says she remains in jail with no bond. WXII reported a violent-offense hold and a $1 million bond on the older counts. The 2025 release listed her age as 44. The murder-charge release, WXII, and FOX 35 Orlando list 45.

Chicago police charged Chevazz Campbell in the stabbing death of CTA janitor Julian Mobley.
A detention hearing is the first court date. It is not a finding that Campbell stabbed anyone. The department's Sunday release says he robbed and fatally stabbed a 41-year-old man in the 2000 block of West Lake Street. ABC7 and CBS Chicago name that man as Julian Mobley and describe a fare dispute that turned into a stabbing. The department's charge list and CBS Chicago's shorter summary do not match count for count.
