Wolfe’s murder conviction was vacated after 25 years. A vacatur and an Alford plea are not the same as a new murder trial.
On Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, Justin Michael Wolfe walked free after a Virginia judge vacated his murder conviction and he resolved marijuana and robbery-related counts for time served, the Associated Press reported. He spent more than a decade on death row.

Vacating a murder conviction ends that judgment. It is not a new finding that a jury just convicted someone else. The Associated Press reported that on Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, Judge Carl Weimer vacated Justin Michael Wolfe’s murder conviction after the only witness tying him to the 2001 shooting of Daniel Petrole recanted, and Wolfe resolved remaining counts for a time-served outcome. An Alford plea lets a defendant accept a conviction while maintaining innocence. It is not a jury’s guilty verdict on murder.
The Associated Press reported Wolfe, 45, spent 25 years in custody, including more than a decade on death row, after a 2002 capital-murder conviction in the March 15, 2001, killing of Daniel Petrole in Bristow, Virginia. Prosecutors had alleged Wolfe hired Owen Barber to shoot Petrole over a drug debt. Barber later pleaded guilty in his own case. Those are the historical charging and conviction facts the AP recounted. They are not a live murder judgment after Monday’s vacatur.
The AP reported Barber later recanted, saying Wolfe was not involved and that officers had threatened him with the death penalty unless he cooperated. Federal courts found prosecutorial misconduct along the way, including a 2025 appellate panel that criticized the Commonwealth’s handling of the case. A federal finding of misconduct is a court ruling about process. It is not itself a murder retrial.
Under Monday’s resolution, the AP reported Wolfe pleaded guilty to selling marijuana and entered an Alford plea to solicitation of robbery, with a sentence that credited time already served so he could be released. Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Amy Ashworth called the outcome just and appropriate for a case mishandled by a prior administration, the AP reported. Petrole’s family asked for privacy and said they hope to remember Danny for his life. A prosecutor’s characterization and a family’s statement are not new trial findings.

Tuscaloosa police charged Daronte Collins with felony murder after a Saturday apartment-complex shooting.
WBRC's jail photo is captioned Daronte Collins and puts both men at 22. The Tuscaloosa Thread, citing Violent Crimes Unit Lt. Michael Hall, spells the charged man Deronte and puts both at 20. Patch and the Calhoun Journal also use Daronte and 20. A felony-murder count, which the Thread and the Journal describe as Alabama's rule when someone dies during a robbery, is not a finding that Collins fired the shot that killed Tyson. The Thread says the 25-year-old has not been charged.

High Point police charged Kymberli Bowden with first-degree murder in her 13-year-old daughter's death.
The Oct. 8 release is a new murder count on a case the department charged in 2025 as felony child abuse and concealment of death. It is not a trial. The murder-charge release says she remains in jail with no bond. WXII reported a violent-offense hold and a $1 million bond on the older counts. The 2025 release listed her age as 44. The murder-charge release, WXII, and FOX 35 Orlando list 45.

Chicago police charged Chevazz Campbell in the stabbing death of CTA janitor Julian Mobley.
A detention hearing is the first court date. It is not a finding that Campbell stabbed anyone. The department's Sunday release says he robbed and fatally stabbed a 41-year-old man in the 2000 block of West Lake Street. ABC7 and CBS Chicago name that man as Julian Mobley and describe a fare dispute that turned into a stabbing. The department's charge list and CBS Chicago's shorter summary do not match count for count.
