Vanderbilt removed Kayleb Barnett after Nashville chokehold and identity charges.
Metro Nashville police charged sophomore wide receiver Kayleb Barnett, 20, with aggravated assault by strangulation, identity theft, and false identification after a downtown fight near the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge. Vanderbilt said he is no longer with the program. The outlets do not agree on whether the fight was early Saturday or on Sunday, Oct. 11.

Three charges and a posted bond are the start of a case. They are not a conviction. WKRN reported an officer saw Barnett, 20, holding a man in a chokehold on Sunday, Oct. 11, and that the man went motionless. WSMV reported the affidavit placed that scene early Saturday. Sports Illustrated reported he posted $5,000 bond. The other man is not named here.
Vanderbilt Athletics told WSMV, FOX 17, and Sports Illustrated: "We are aware of the situation. Kayleb Barnett violated team and university standards and is no longer with the program." FOX 17 reported he is a sophomore wide receiver. WKRN and Sports Illustrated reported he is 20. On3 reported the program removed him Monday and described that as a dismissal. Vanderbilt's own statement stops at this: he is no longer with the program.
The day of the fight is not the same in every account. WKRN reported an officer standing in front of Barstool on Second Avenue South saw an altercation south of the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge on Sunday, Oct. 11, after Vanderbilt's 52-17 loss to Ole Miss on Saturday, Oct. 10. FOX 17 reported the fight was Oct. 11 near the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge, which is the same bridge. The Tennessean reported court records showed an Oct. 11 arrest. WSMV reported the arrest affidavit placed the chokehold near that bridge early Saturday, outside the Barstool Sports bar on Second Avenue. Sports Illustrated reported a Saturday-night arrest. On3 reported a Saturday fight after the loss. Sunday, Oct. 11, and early Saturday are not the same night. The affidavit day is unresolved in these accounts.
WKRN and Sports Illustrated reported the same passage from the arrest report. An officer saw Barnett holding the man in a chokehold, then "observed the victim fall to the ground, motionless, appearing to be unconscious, with a substantial amount of blood surrounding his person that was emanating from the victim." Both reported officers detained Barnett without incident and that the man woke up shortly afterward. WSMV reported the affidavit said the man fell motionless, appeared unconscious, and regained consciousness after Barnett was detained. FOX 17 reported the affidavit said the man fell, was motionless and bleeding, appeared unconscious, and regained consciousness shortly after officers detained Barnett. The man is not named in these stories. He is not named here.
The accounts of who swung first do not match. WKRN reported a witness, the designated driver for the other man's party, said he was across the street and saw Barnett throw the first punch. WSMV, FOX 17, and Sports Illustrated reported a witness said Barnett threw first. Barnett told police the other man swung first, that he dodged, and that he held the man down to stop the fight, those outlets reported. WKRN, WSMV, and FOX 17 reported officers called Barnett the predominant aggressor. That is a police label in an affidavit. It is not a jury finding.
WKRN reported officers found two IDs with Barnett's name and photo and different birthdays. One belonged to him and showed he was under 21. The other came back to a different person, WKRN reported. FOX 17 reported the warrants said one ID's information came back to Barnett and the other came back to someone else, and that the warrants do not say when or how he allegedly used either ID. Sports Illustrated reported the charges as aggravated assault by strangulation and identity theft, both felonies, and false identification, a misdemeanor. FOX 17 described the assault count as aggravated assault involving strangulation. The Tennessean described it as aggravated assault by strangulation, identity theft, and use of a false ID.
Sports Illustrated reported he posted a $5,000 bond: $3,500 on the strangulation charge, $1,000 on identity theft, and $500 on false identification. It reported a settlement hearing on Nov. 13 at 10:30 a.m. WKRN reported a $5,000 bond and a Nov. 13 court date, without the time or the split. On3 reported the Nov. 13 settlement hearing is before Judge Jodie Bell. A bond and a court date are process. The charges are still charges. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

St. Petersburg police arrested Jaida Thomas-McFatten on a warrant in a deadly scooter hit-and-run.
An arrest on a leaving-the-scene warrant is an accusation. It is not a conviction for causing the death. Police described the man crossing outside the crosswalk and against the walk signal into the westbound curb lane. That is the department's account of how the collision happened. The charge filed is leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Causation and fault remain for a court, not a press release.
