Homicide, in WEAR's lede, and second-degree murder, on NorthEscambia.com, in WEAR's booking sentence, and in the Pensacola News Journal, are not the same charge line. Mapleleaf Circle, and Maple Leaf Circle, are not the same spelling. Kordaja, in the News Journal sentence, and Kodaja, in that page's address, are not the same spelling. NorthEscambia.com, on November 5, 2026, reported an Escambia County woman is behind bars without bond, charged with second-degree murder after a fatal domestic stabbing early Wednesday morning. It reported Kordaja Lakita Smith, 29, was arrested following the death of her live-in boyfriend, Deontrey Anthony Brown, at a home in the 400 block of Mapleleaf Circle, off Music Lane just north of Nine Mile Road. It reported that, according to an Escambia County Sheriff's Office arrest report, deputies were dispatched to 475 Mapleleaf Circle around 5:40 a.m. regarding a cutting victim, that Smith was at the front door and was told to step outside, and that Brown was unresponsive on the living room couch with a stab wound to his left shoulder. The 400 block, and 475, are both on that page. It reported first responders initiated life-saving measures and Brown succumbed to his injuries at the scene. It reported that while a protective sweep was conducted she stated, unprompted, "Y'all are going to think I did this." It reported she initially claimed the wound was self-inflicted, that she told investigators the two had been arguing over alleged infidelity, and that Brown grabbed a large knife from a butcher block on the kitchen counter and stabbed himself to get her attention before collapsing. It reported that in a 12-minute 911 call she gave varying accounts, at one point telling dispatchers he had "fell on a [expletive] knife," and that she later admitted to detectives she had fabricated that story. It reported a neighbor heard a verbal altercation around 5 a.m., including a male voice shouting phrases to the effect of "stop sticking me" or "stop hitting me." Around 5 a.m., for the neighbor, and around 5:40 a.m., for the dispatch, are not the same clock. It reported a pool of blood near the front door and extensive blood throughout the living room, and a large chef's knife, measuring 6 to 8 inches, covered in blood, recovered from the couch. It reported that when asked if she had stabbed Brown out of frustration during the argument, she began to cry and stated, "I'm sorry," and, "I blacked out," and that when an investigator remarked they did not believe she intended to kill him, she nodded and replied, "No, I didn't," before invoking her right to counsel. It reported she repeatedly confirmed Brown had not physically harmed or threatened her, which the report stated negated any claim of self-defense, and that she was booked into the Escambia County Jail and remains held without bond.
