Memphis police charged Lewis Bynum with first-degree murder after a shooting in the 800 block of Crockett Street.

The Memphis Police Department's November 2, 2026, release says Lewis Bynum, 78, was arrested after officers found a man shot in the 800 block of Crockett Street at about 4:35 p.m. on October 30. The release does not name the man who died. Action News 5 reported witnesses described a $6 debt. His bond had not been posted on that page.

First-degree murder on the police release is a charge. It is not a conviction. The release does not name the man who was shot, and neither do the Action News 5 stories or the FOX13 story. The $6 debt is Stuart Rucker's account of what a witness told police. The 800 block of Crockett Street, and Crockett Place and Vollentine Avenue, are not the same place line.

The Memphis Police Department release dated November 2, 2026, with no clock on the page, is headed Arrested: Homicide, 800 Block of Crockett St, and prints the number 2610030325ME. It says that on October 30, 2026, at approximately 4:35 p.m., officers responded to a shooting call in the 800 block of Crockett St. It says officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound who was pronounced deceased on the scene. It does not name him. It says officers detained a male on scene, identified as Lewis Bynum, and discovered he and the victim were involved in an altercation prior to the shooting. It says Lewis Bynum, 78, was arrested and charged with First-Degree Murder, Employment of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, and Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Those three counts are capitalized on the release. The release does not print a bond, a debt, a shell casing, or a court date.

Action News 5, published Nov. 2, 2026, at 10:16 a.m. CST, reported a 78-year-old man is facing murder charges after an argument led to a deadly shooting in North Memphis Friday afternoon. Argument, in that headline, and altercation, on the police release, are not the same word. It reported that, according to Memphis Police, officers responded to a shooting call in the 800 block of Crockett Street just after 4:30 p.m., found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, and that he was pronounced dead at the scene. Just after 4:30 p.m., and approximately 4:35 p.m., are not the same clock. Crockett Street, and Crockett St, are not the same spelling. It reported officers detained Lewis Bynum, 78, on the scene, that he and the victim were involved in an altercation, and that he was charged with first-degree murder, employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. First-degree murder, in lowercase, and First-Degree Murder, on the release, are not the same capitalization. The man who died is not named. The story does not print $6.

Action News 5, by Stuart Rucker, published Nov. 2, 2026, at 6:52 p.m. CST, reported Lewis Bynum, 78, has been charged with first-degree murder after Memphis police said he allegedly shot and killed someone over a $6 debt. The story URL is dated 2026/11/03. The byline time is Nov. 2. It reported that on October 30 officers responded to a shooting call near the Crockett Place Apartments near Crockett Place and Vollentine Avenue. Crockett Place and Vollentine Avenue, and the 800 block of Crockett Street, are not the same place line. It reported the 911 caller said a man had been shot and the person responsible was lying in the middle of the street, and that the caller gave a description. It reported a witness told officers Bynum was the shooter and that police records state he matched the description. It reported the victim was pronounced dead on the scene by Memphis Fire Department paramedics. Paramedics, on that page, and pronounced deceased on the scene, on the release with no agency named for the pronouncement, are not the same sentence. It reported police records state officers located several spent .357 and .38 shell casings in the street, multiple live .38 rounds, and one live .357 round. It reported another witness said that before the shooting Bynum had said he was going to jail and that he was going to kill someone "because they owed him $6." It reported that witness went inside, heard multiple gunshots, and came out to find Bynum standing over the victim. It reported the witness said people from the neighborhood confronted Bynum, knocked him to the ground, and that ammunition fell from his pockets. It reported another witness saw Bynum confront the victim over the $6 debt and, when the victim refused to pay, shot him and fired several more rounds when he fell. The witnesses are not named. It reported a criminal history search showed he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in May 1988. That plea is a prior case on that page. It is not this charge. It reported he is being held in police custody and that his bond information has not been posted yet. The police release does not print the bond line.

FOX13, by Andy Lockley, dated Nov. 2, 2026, with no clock in the article text, reported a 78-year-old man has been charged with murder after a shooting in North Memphis on Friday. Charged with murder, in that lede, and charged with first-degree murder, in the charge sentence, are both on that page. It reported that just after 4:30 Friday afternoon officers were sent to the area of Crockett Street, found a man who had been shot, and that he was pronounced dead at the scene. The area of Crockett Street is not the 800 block, and it is not Crockett Place and Vollentine Avenue. It reported Memphis Police detained Lewis Bynum at the scene and found that he and the victim had been fighting. Fighting, and an altercation, and an argument, are not the same word. It reported the charges were first-degree murder, employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. It reported police previously said a second person was detained at the scene, and that there has been no word on if any additional charges will be filed. That person is not named. FOX13 does not print $6, a casing, the 1988 plea, or a bond. The man who was killed is not named on the release, on either Action News 5 story, or on FOX13. A charge is not a conviction. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
