Thursday is the charge. Tuesday is the standoff. ABC45 names her Wanda Elaine Dumas. The Sentinel, citing the SBI release, names her Wanda Dumas. ABC45 says the Highway Patrol assisted. The thank-you the Sentinel quoted from that release names the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the Moore County Sheriff's Office, and Alcohol Law Enforcement, and does not name the Highway Patrol. Neither story reported a plea or a court date. Additional charges, both said, may still be filed.
ABC45 reported Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a homicide and an assault on law enforcement officers in Candor, at the request of Montgomery County Sheriff Pete Herron. The station reported that on Tuesday, Oct. 20, SBI agents went to a standoff with a person identified as Lorenzo Dumas at 121 Wiley Drive. Tactical teams from North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement and the Moore County Sheriff's Office also responded. When the standoff ended, investigators found Wanda Elaine Dumas dead inside the home, the station reported. Lorenzo Dumas was alive, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, and was taken to a hospital. ABC45 reported he is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, that more charges may be filed, and that the SBI said the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the Moore County Sheriff's Office, the North Carolina Highway Patrol, and Alcohol Law Enforcement assisted. The station reported the investigation is continuing and that nothing further was released.
The Sandhills Sentinel's Thursday story is its account of an SBI press release, and the names are not stable inside it. The sentence that places the standoff at 121 Wiley Drive calls him Lorzeno Dumas. The next sentence calls him Lorenzo Dumas. ABC45 uses Lorenzo both times. The Sentinel reported the SBI said Wanda Dumas was found deceased in the home. It does not print the middle name Elaine. It reported the same murder count and the same two assault counts, and that additional charges may be filed. It quoted the SBI thanking the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the Moore County Sheriff's Office, and Alcohol Law Enforcement. That quotation does not include the Highway Patrol. ABC45 reported the SBI said the Highway Patrol assisted. Neither outlet reported an age, a plea, or a next court date. The murder count and the two assault counts are the charges both said have been filed. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Reading police charged Oliver Paniagua-Pena with murder in the stabbing of Leonardo Mercado-Gomez.
Thursday is an arrest and an arraignment, and the two accounts do not describe the DNA the same way. The department's Friday release says DNA links him to the scene. The Reading Eagle, laying out what police said, says testing of a bicycle could not exclude him. Could not exclude is a comparison. The Eagle's count list is longer than the release. None of it is a conviction.

Thames Valley Police charged Joshua Clarke with murder in the Datchet crash that killed Daniel Shipton.
The murder count is the charge. The age on the public record moved a day later. Thames Valley Police amended it to 40 on Oct. 22. BBC's story the day of the charge called him 39. BBC reported he had already been before magistrates and was due at Reading Crown Court on Thursday. This account does not have a report of what that Thursday listing produced. A murder charge is the accusation.

Pemberton Mayor Matthew Bianchini lunged at a resident, and the resident asked a court for charges.
A complaint a resident files is a request that charges be brought. It is not a charge police or a prosecutor have announced. WPVI and Fox News reported the department has not said whether it will file the counts Sawka listed. Bianchini told WPVI the lunge was wrong and that he would do it again if he had to. Those are his words after the meeting. They are not a plea, and they are not a finding that a crime occurred.
