The BBC reported Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, that Louis James, 50, received life with a minimum of 23 years for murder, and Dereck Owusu, 43, received 14 years for manslaughter, after a retrial in the 2022 stabbing of Reece Radford, 26, in Sheffield. Friday's terms are the sentences after the retrial. James was again convicted of murder. Owusu's count changed from murder to manslaughter, and 14 years is not a life sentence. Yorkshire Live said the retrial verdicts came earlier this week and did not print the date. The BBC reported the sentences on Friday and did not date the verdicts.

The BBC reported Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, in a story by Alex Moss, that Leeds Crown Court sentenced Louis James, 50, to life with a minimum term of 23 years, and Dereck Owusu, 43, to 14 years. The BBC said James was convicted of murder and Owusu of manslaughter after a retrial. Yorkshire Live reported the same day, in a story by Sophie Corcoran timestamped 14:21, that the sentences were imposed Friday, Oct. 30, at Leeds Crown Court, that James's previous sentence was life with a minimum of 25 years, and that Owusu's previous sentence was life with a minimum of 15 years. Twenty-three years and 25 years are the two minima those accounts give for James. Fourteen years, the new term for Owusu, is not a life sentence. Fifteen years was the minimum on the life sentence Yorkshire Live said he received the first time. The BBC said both men were originally jailed for life in 2023 after being convicted of Radford's murder. Yorkshire Live reported they were found guilty of murder at Sheffield Crown Court in April 2023. The BBC did not print Sheffield Crown Court or the April date.

Yorkshire Live reported a retrial was ordered because an appeal against the original convictions was upheld by the Court of Appeal. The BBC reported they appealed and that a retrial was held, and did not name the Court of Appeal. Yorkshire Live reported that earlier this week a jury at Leeds Crown Court upheld James's murder conviction and found Owusu guilty of manslaughter rather than murder. The BBC reported those were the retrial results and did not say which day the jury returned them. Earlier this week, in Friday's Yorkshire Live story, is that paper's timing. It is not a date.

The BBC reported Reece Radford, 26, was fatally stabbed after he intervened in an altercation in Arundel Gate, Sheffield, in 2022. The BBC said that, at the original trial, the court heard he confronted the two men after he saw Owusu punch a 17-year-old girl in the face in Arundel Gate in the early hours of Sept. 29, 2022. She is not named in this story. The BBC said Radford had met her briefly earlier that night, that he saw Owusu strike her with such force that she fell, and that he punched Owusu in the face. The BBC quoted prosecutor David Temkin KC: "He did so in order to protect a young female who he had just seen being punched." The BBC said Owusu, previously of Strathmore Grove, Rotherham, and James, previously of Manor Lane, Sheffield, then attacked Radford, and that James stabbed him. The BBC said Radford died in hospital six days later from a stab wound. Yorkshire Live reported the same date, the same street, the same sequence of a punch, an intervention, a stabbing by James, and death in hospital six days later. Yorkshire Live did not print the ages, the previous addresses, or Temkin's name.

The BBC quoted Detective Inspector Adam Watkinson of South Yorkshire Police after the sentencing. He said he was glad Radford's family finally have closure and that the pair "have once more been returned to jail where they belong." The BBC quoted him saying Radford "acted as a Good Samaritan, going out of his way to defend a young person who he did not know," and that Radford should not have had to pay for that with his life. Yorkshire Live reported that, at the earlier sentencing, Radford's mother, Ms Radford, said in a statement, "I am so proud to say he was my son. It was not just my son that was killed that night - my family was killed." The BBC did not print that statement. Friday's terms are the sentences on the retrial verdicts. James's minimum is 23 years. Owusu's term is 14 years.

Jamazea Kittell in a Vallejo courtroom
Trials

By Crime Talk Network Staff Writer

An Alameda County jury convicted Jamazea Kittell of first-degree murder in the shooting of Perez Kalief-Chambers.

Thursday's guilty verdicts are the jury's finding on the Oakland counts. They are not the prison term. The Solano County case, in which Judge Robert Bowers held him for assault with a deadly weapon rather than attempted murder of a police officer, is still pending. Thirty-three, in the conviction coverage, and thirty-one, in the July 2025 charging story, are not the same age.

Trials

A Khorasan Razavi court sentenced Najmeh Amini to death over a social media post.

The death sentence is what The Guardian and the Center for Human Rights in Iran reported a trial court imposed. It is not a ruling by Iran's Supreme Court. The Guardian said the sentence remains subject to that appeal. An arrest during January's protests, in The Guardian, and a Feb. 3 arrest at a Mashhad shopping center, in the center's account of the Khorasan newspaper, are not the same arrest. The exact words of the post are not in either story.

Ryan Brough
Trials

By Crime Talk Network Staff Writer

The Daily Mail reported Ryan Brough and Max Tyson were each sentenced to three years and four months.

Three years and four months each is the term in the Mail's body and in the Met release. The Mail's headline figure of seven years is not that term, and 40 months plus 40 months is six years and eight months. The Met's date of birth for Brough is not an age of 32 in October 2026.
