Chicago police charged Malik Nelson with murder in the September shooting death of Raymond Hammitte.
The Chicago Police Department said Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, that Nelson, 31, was arrested Friday in the Loop and charged with two murder counts in the Sept. 10 shooting of a 38-year-old man in the 800 block of North Kedzie Avenue. The Chicago Sun-Times identified him as Raymond Hammitte, who died Sept. 15. A detention hearing was set for Sunday at 2600 South California.

The police release files two murder counts and names nobody who was shot. The Sun-Times, citing police and the Cook County medical examiner, names one man shot in the head. Put together, the second count reads as another legal theory of the same killing, not a second victim. Sunday's detention hearing is the first point where a judge, rather than a news release, decides whether Nelson stays in custody. Police still have not said why Hammitte was shot.
Chicago police on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, charged Malik Nelson, 31, with murder in a September shooting in Humboldt Park, a department release said, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago. The release says Nelson, of the 3100 block of West Franklin Boulevard, was arrested Friday, Oct. 16, in the 200 block of North Michigan Avenue. It says he was identified as the person who, on Sept. 10, fatally shot a 38-year-old man in the 800 block of North Kedzie Avenue, in the 11th District.
Police listed two felony counts: first-degree murder, and a murder count described as a strong probability of death or injury. A detention hearing was set for Sunday at 2600 South California. The department said nothing further was available. FOX 32 reported that the release does not name the man who was shot and does not describe what led up to it.
The Chicago Sun-Times, citing police and the Cook County medical examiner's office, identified the man as Raymond Hammitte, 38. The paper reported he was shot in the head, taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, and died five days later. A Sun-Times report on Sept. 17 said Hammitte was shot in the face and head around 5:10 p.m. on Sept. 10 in that block of North Kedzie, died Sept. 15, and that the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide from multiple gunshot wounds. That September account named no suspect.
The release and the Sun-Times account describe one man shot and killed. They do not describe a second person killed. Police have not publicly given a motive, said whether Nelson and Hammitte knew each other, or reported what the Sunday detention hearing decided. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Savannah police arrested Charles Miller and charged him with murder after asking the public to help find him.
Saturday was a wanted notice. Sunday morning was a murder charge. That is the whole public arc so far. Police have not named the woman, have not said how she died, and have not said what, beyond the label domestic homicide, ties Miller to the house. The charging paperwork is where those blanks get filled in, or become the first thing a defense lawyer has to work with.

Sacramento detectives charged Gurinder Singh Gill with murder after burned remains in El Dorado County were identified as his wife.
The ICE account is the detail that carried this case out of Sacramento, and it is also the detail investigators say they checked and were told was false. What the public record still does not say is how Jasmine Gill died, where in El Dorado County the remains were found, or what two search warrants produced. An arraignment with no next date posted means the case is filed and not yet on a calendar the sheriff or the court has put out.

An 18-year-old Oak Park man is charged with murder and denied bond in the shooting death of a 16-year-old Detroit girl.
Four counts of assault with intent to murder, when police have described one person killed and one wounded, suggests prosecutors believe more people were in the line of fire. That is one of the first things to watch as the charging details come out. Police have not said anything yet about why a 16-year-old was shot.
