Philip Ambrose pleaded not guilty to murder and guilty to manslaughter in the death of Michael Hayes.
RTÉ, the Limerick Leader and The Journal reported Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, that Ambrose told the Central Criminal Court in Limerick he was pleading not guilty to murder and guilty to manslaughter. The Leader says he is 44 and Hayes was 71, and it prints July 10, 2025. RTÉ and The Journal say he is 43 and Hayes was 72, and they do not print that date.

The plea those outlets reported is an admission to manslaughter. It is not a sentence. The Leader says he is back on Oct. 30 so a sentencing date can be set. RTÉ and The Journal say next Friday, for a date for the sentence hearing, and do not print Oct. 30. The Leader is also the outlet that says the prosecution told the court the plea was acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Philip Ambrose pleaded not guilty to murder and guilty to manslaughter in the death of Michael Hayes at the Central Criminal Court in Limerick on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, RTÉ, the Limerick Leader and The Journal reported. The Leader reported he is 44, of no fixed abode, and that he told Mr Justice Seán Gillane, "I plead not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter." The Journal reported he is 43 and quoted him, before Judge Sean Gillane, "I plead not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter." RTÉ reported he is 43 and that he pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to the manslaughter of Michael Hayes before Mr Justice Sean Gillane. The Leader reported senior counsel Michael Delaney told the court the manslaughter plea was acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions. RTÉ and The Journal reported Delaney accepted the plea and said he would ask Hayes's family for victim impact statements. All three reported Ambrose was remanded in continuing custody. All three reported he had previously been flagged for a psychiatric evaluation after he was charged with murder. A flag for an evaluation is what those stories said the court had heard. It is not a finding.
The date, and the two ages, are where the accounts separate. The Leader reported he had been charged with the murder of Michael Hayes, 71, at St Michael's Court, Watergate, Limerick city, on July 10, 2025. RTÉ and The Journal reported Hayes was 72 and did not print July 10, 2025. All three reported he was from Kilmurry Court, Garryowen, that he was found with critical injuries outside his home at St Michael's Court, that neighbours went to him, and that he was taken by ambulance to hospital and pronounced dead. All three reported that when gardaí originally charged Ambrose with murder he made no reply, and that the court heard he had been unemployed and was receiving a disability allowance. All three reported Hayes was a retired member of the 12th Infantry Battalion at Sarsfield Barracks and a former member of Irish United Nations Veterans Association Post 6. The Leader reported the next date is Friday, Oct. 30, when a sentencing date will be set. RTÉ and The Journal reported he is due back next Friday to receive a date for the sentence hearing, and neither printed Oct. 30.
What relatives said about Hayes is in RTÉ's account of the funeral, not in the Thursday plea stories from the Leader or The Journal. RTÉ reported that after his death the family thanked neighbours in Watergate, "especially Vinny Lee," for going to him that night. It reported retired members of the Defence Forces and the United Nations performed a guard of honour at the funeral Mass at St John's Cathedral, and that the coffin was draped in the tricolour. RTÉ reported one of his four sons told mourners his father "brought smiles, told stories, made memories," and "He was 72 years old when his life was taken from us." The son's "72" is the figure in that tribute, as RTÉ reported it. The Leader's 71 is the age in the Leader's court story. RTÉ reported a nephew said Hayes had been "a gentleman," that the Garryowen Residents Association called him "an extremely pleasant, gentle person," and that others said, "He was a pure gentleman who had a heart of gold." Those are funeral words in RTÉ's story. They are not the plea.
Thursday's hearing is the manslaughter admission the three outlets reported, and the murder count is the charge he did not plead guilty to. No sentence was imposed. The next listed step, in the Leader's account, is Oct. 30, to set a sentencing date. RTÉ and The Journal call that step next Friday and do not print the day. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
