Open murder is how Michigan charges a killing without locking prosecutors into first or second degree at the start. It is an accusation, not a verdict. Deputies say other people were in the house and called 911, and that a detective spotted Hansen minutes later after his car broke down on 14 Mile Road. What a court still has to decide is what the state can prove, and why it happened.

Ryan Hansen, 30, was arraigned Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, in Kent County's 63rd District Court on charges of open murder and felony firearm in the shooting death of his mother, Diane Kilmar-Luman, 56, WZZM 13 and News Channel 3 (WWMT) reported, citing the Kent County Sheriff's Office. He was denied bond. Investigators said more charges may follow. An arraignment is when the charges are read. It is not a plea of guilty, and it is not a conviction.

Deputies say Kilmar-Luman was shot multiple times inside the home on Indian Lakes Drive in Algoma Township, north of Grand Rapids near Sparta, on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 15, and died at the scene. WZZM 13 reported the shooting happened around 10 a.m.; WWMT reported deputies placed it at about 9 a.m. and described the location as Indian Lakes Road NE near Pine Island Drive NE. The two accounts do not agree on the hour. Other people were in the home at the time and called police, and they told deputies Hansen had driven off, WZZM 13 reported.

An undercover sheriff's detective spotted him near Ritchie Avenue and 14 Mile Road, WZZM 13 reported. His vehicle had broken down, and he was getting into another vehicle when deputies took him into custody. Investigators later learned he had called a rideshare to pick him up, the station reported. WWMT reported he was arrested about 30 minutes after the shooting and that a cellphone ping led deputies to him. Detectives served search warrants at the home and on his vehicle and recovered multiple spent bullet casings, WZZM 13 reported.

Sheriff Bryan Muir said at a news conference last week that the shooting happened across the street from a Flock license-plate camera that had recently been damaged. "Where the placement of that camera was damaged likely would have captured a plate and would have triggered an immediate alert to our offices as to where that vehicle was last seen," Muir said, as WZZM 13 reported. WOOD TV8 reported that Hansen's father said his son left him a calm voicemail after the shooting. Investigators have not publicly laid out a motive in the accounts used here. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff's officials named Edward Villa as the suspect after Katie Kinder, her son and her mother were found shot to death in Happy Valley.

Thursday's briefing names the three people and names Villa as the only suspect. The warrant was three counts of first-degree murder. He was found dead before an arrest. KPTV, citing Warrenton police, called it an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. KGW reported Detective Matt Lysaght would not go past a gunshot deputies heard, a firearm in the room, and the fact that no officer fired. KPTV and OPB call the motel the South Jetty Inn. The Oregonian calls it the South Jetty Motel.

An Oahu grand jury indicted Orion Satori on a second-degree murder charge in the Young Street stabbing of Kiril Stoimenov.

An indictment means a grand jury found enough to send the case forward. It is not a finding of guilt. Police have said Satori did the stabbing, according to Hawaii News Now. The next step is arraignment, where he will be asked to enter a plea. Second-degree murder in Hawaii carries a maximum of life with the possibility of parole, the station reported.
