KSL reported Ryley Jilberto Avila was charged with murder and aggravated robbery in the killing of Abraham Martinez.

Pat Reavy's Nov. 4, 2026, story says Avila, 26, of Taylorsville, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court in the Oct. 24 shooting of Martinez, 24, in a West Valley City restaurant parking lot. The same reporter's Oct. 28 story, and ABC4, and KUTV, spell him Gilberto and describe an aggravated-murder arrest. KSL's Nov. 4 story says two children, ages 2 and 4, were in the backseat. They are not named here.

Murder, on the Nov. 4 charging story, and aggravated murder, on the Oct. 28 arrest accounts, are not the same charge. One count of discharge of a firearm, and two counts, are not the same count. Jilberto, and Gilberto, are not the same spelling. ABC4 reported he had not yet been formally charged. That sentence is the arrest story. It is not the Nov. 4 charge list.

KSL, by Pat Reavy, posted Nov. 4, 2026, at 1:12 p.m., with no time zone on that clock, reported that Ryley Jilberto Avila, of Taylorsville, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with murder and aggravated robbery, first-degree felonies; discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony; and two counts of reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor. The key takeaways on that page say Ryley Avila, 26, was charged with murder and aggravated robbery. Ryley Jilberto Avila, and Ryley Avila, are not the same fullness of the name. It reported that on Oct. 24, at about 1 a.m., he went to a restaurant parking lot at 3122 S. 5600 West, allegedly to buy drugs. It quoted the charges: "The defendant went to IHOP under the guise of buying cocaine but apparently had no money for the purchase and produced a gun in an attempt to rob the victim." It reported Abraham Martinez, 24, went with his girlfriend and their two children, ages 2 and 4, and that Martinez was in the backseat with the children when Avila and two others talked to him through the back window. The children are not named here. The girlfriend is not named here. It quoted the charges that an argument ensued, that he pulled out a gun and racked it, and that a witness told him there were kids in the car and they couldn't get into the car. It reported the girlfriend, who was driving, heard Martinez say "over and over again, 'We have kids.'" It quoted another witness who saw him "point the gun in the face of the victim inside the car" and fire, striking the victim, and the charges' line that he "shot his gun inside the vehicle, where two children were seated next to the victim." It reported that as the car drove off he fired a second round, hitting the rear driver's side door. It reported a tip later that morning from someone who said Avila was "freaking out" because he claimed "he tried to rob someone and a shot went off." A shot went off, and pointed the gun and fired, are both in the charging account KSL printed. They are not the same description of the shot. It reported one of the men with him suspected a robbery because Avila had no money for drugs, and that the man "was never aware of any plan to shoot anyone and thought they were only going to buy cocaine." It reported Martinez was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the head, and that Avila was arrested at a Taylorsville apartment with the assistance of a SWAT team.

KSL's Oct. 28, 2026, story, also by Pat Reavy, posted at 11:04 a.m. and updated at 11:58 a.m., with no zone on those clocks, spells him Ryley Gilberto Avila. Gilberto, on that page, and Jilberto, on the Nov. 4 page, are not the same spelling. It reported he was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Tuesday for investigation of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and two counts of discharge of a firearm. For investigation of, and was charged, are not the same status. Aggravated murder, and murder, are not the same charge. Two counts of discharge of a firearm, and one count of discharge of a firearm, are not the same count. The Oct. 28 story does not print reckless endangerment. It reported that on Saturday, at about 1 a.m., Avila and another male met the victim at 3122 S. 5600 West. Avila and another male, and Avila and two others, are not the same number of people with him. It reported investigators have not said what the meeting was about. Have not said what the meeting was about, on Oct. 28, and buying cocaine at an IHOP, on Nov. 4, are not the same account. It quoted West Valley police that the meeting "turned into an altercation where at least one shot was fired, striking the victim." It quoted a booking affidavit that three rounds were fired, that Martinez was struck once in the head, and that two additional shots entered the vehicle while two minor children were seated next to him. At least one shot, and three rounds, are both on the Oct. 28 page. They are not the same count. Three rounds, with two additional shots entering the vehicle, and one shot plus a second round into the rear driver's side door, are not the same count. It reported Martinez, 24, was taken by a companion to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his head and later died. A companion, and the girlfriend who was driving, are not the same word. Later died, and pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the head, are not the same sentence. It quoted police that he "was in the back passenger seat of his own vehicle" and that it was unknown why Avila fired. Back passenger seat, and backseat, are not the same phrase. It reported he told witnesses that if they talked to police, he would kill them too. The Nov. 4 story does not print that threat. The Oct. 28 story also reported earlier warrants: an August 3rd District Court case charging unlawful use of a credit card, failing to stop for police and use of drug paraphernalia, and a March case charging theft and unlawful use and acquisition of a financial card. It quoted charging documents that he used another person's "debit card to make 67 unauthorized transactions totaling $1,675 at multiple online gambling sites" in one week, and that warrants issued when he missed court. The Nov. 4 charging story does not print those cases.

ABC4 reported Ryley Gilberto Avila, 26, has been arrested on aggravated murder, a first-degree felony; aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; and two counts of felony discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony. It reported, "He has not yet been formally charged." Not yet formally charged, on ABC4, and charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court, on KSL's Nov. 4 story, are not the same status. ABC4's account is the arrest, and it uses Gilberto. It reported that on Saturday, Oct. 24, a victim was brought to St. Mark's West Valley emergency room with a gunshot wound to the head and was later declared deceased. St. Mark's West Valley emergency room is not a hospital name on either KSL story. It reported witnesses identified him as the shooter and said he met the victim with "the intent to rob him of cash." Intent to rob him of cash, and the guise of buying cocaine with no money, are not the same robbery line. It reported the victim was in his vehicle with his two minor children, that an argument followed, and that Avila allegedly fired three times, striking him in the head once. It reported documents say he threatened witnesses he would "kill them too" if they spoke to police, that a SWAT team apprehended him because he was hiding, and that he was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, held without bail, with no job and no ties to the community. Without bail, no job, and no ties are on ABC4. They are not on KSL's Nov. 4 story. KUTV, by Derick Fox, published Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 9:55 a.m. and updated at 11:39 a.m., with no zone on those clocks, spells him Ryley Gilberto Avila, 26, of Taylorsville. It reported a SWAT team arrested him Tuesday and that he was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on one count of first-degree felony aggravated murder, one count of first-degree felony aggravated robbery, and two counts of third-degree felony discharge of a firearm. It reported Martinez arranged to meet a group, including Avila, in a parking lot near 3100 South 5600 West. Near 3100 South 5600 West, and 3122 S. 5600 West, are not the same address. It reported he shot three times, that Martinez, in the backseat next to his two underage children, was struck once in the head, and that two additional shots entered the car and no other injuries were reported. Two minor children, on ABC4, two underage children, on KUTV, and two children ages 2 and 4, on KSL's Nov. 4 story, are not the same wording. None of the three names the children. KUTV reported Avila's companion rushed Martinez to the emergency center across the street, and that Martinez was then taken to St. Marks Hospital, where he died the next evening. The same KUTV story also says he was brought to St. Marks Hospital on Saturday. Emergency center across the street, then St. Marks, and brought to St. Marks on Saturday, are both on that page. St. Marks, on KUTV, and St. Mark's, on ABC4, are not the same punctuation. Died the next evening is on KUTV. It is not on KSL's Nov. 4 story. KUTV's headline calls Martinez a father. KSL's Nov. 4 story does not print the word father. It says the girlfriend and their two children. A charge is an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

WJLA says Judge Neal Kravitz found Jaime Macedo guilty of voluntary manslaughter while armed. NBC4 says he pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Voluntary manslaughter while armed, and voluntary manslaughter, and manslaughter, are not the same count. Brookland-CUA Metro, and Brookland Metro, and Brookland-Catholic University Metro, are not the same station line. Snapchat messages, and a message, and an urgent message, are not the same account. Cash App, and cash app, and $300 with no app named, are not the same line. Judge Kravitz accepted the plea and found Jaime Macedo guilty of voluntary manslaughter while armed. A 12-to-15-year range is not the sentence. Sentencing has not happened.
