A Cook County judge ordered Shavon Gayden held in jail after her Friday murder hearing.

WTTW and CBS Chicago reported that on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, Shavon Gayden, 48, appeared in court after two hearings were reset because she was hospitalized. A judge ordered her to remain at Cook County Jail on a first-degree murder charge in the Oct. 3 stabbing death of a 7-year-old girl in East Chatham. CBS Chicago reported the judge also signed an order for a psychiatric evaluation. She is due back Oct. 26.

Friday's order keeps Gayden in jail and sends her for a psychiatric evaluation. It does not decide the murder charge. WTTW reported a Cook County judge ordered her held at the jail. CBS Chicago reported an outburst in court, that her public defender asked for the evaluation, and that the judge denied release. The next date is Oct. 26. An evaluation order is a medical step. It is not a finding that she is unfit, and it is not a dismissal.

The Chicago Police Department said in an Oct. 4, 2026 release that Shavon Gayden, 48, of the 8700 block of South Constance Avenue, was arrested about 11:56 a.m. on Oct. 3 in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue and charged with one felony count of first-degree murder. Police said she was identified as the person who, minutes earlier, fatally stabbed a 7-year-old girl there. A police charge names a defendant. It does not decide the case.

NBC Chicago reported that prosecutors said the child was walking with her teenage sister on South Cottage Grove Avenue near East 86th Street just before noon Saturday, after they left a business where they were paying a phone bill. Prosecutors said Gayden had threatened a sales associate, then left carrying a tote bag. Employees told NBC Chicago she yelled and threatened to kill them and did not show a weapon. Prosecutors said she took a knife from the bag, lunged at the teenager, who moved aside, then took the 7-year-old to the ground and stabbed her multiple times in the back. The child was pronounced dead at Comer Children's Hospital. ABC7 Chicago reported bystanders chased Gayden and that one person struck her, knocking her unconscious. A Chicago police officer told the court Monday that she remains hospitalized with a head injury, ABC7 reported. That is the account prosecutors gave. A trial has not tested it.

FOX 32 Chicago reported Gayden could not appear Monday for her detention hearing and that a judge ordered her to remain detained at the hospital until the next hearing, set for Wednesday. NBC Chicago reported the same order and dated the hearing Oct. 7. ABC7 Chicago reported she is also due in court the following day on an alleged probation violation. ABC7 reported court records show four earlier cases, including two domestic-battery cases, a 2023 charge of attacking a CTA bus driver that ended in two years of probation, and a 2024 shelter case that produced a probation violation and a February 2025 arrest warrant after she missed court. The station reported it is unclear whether that warrant was executed. FOX 32 reported department records list arrests from 2016 through 2024 that include domestic battery, aggravated battery of a transit employee, and aggravated assault of a peace officer. Those files are their own records. They do not decide this charge.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, that Gayden was set to appear for an initial hearing and that the date was reset a second time because she was still hospitalized. The detention hearing was then set for Friday morning. The Sun-Times reported the sister who was with the child is 17. She is not named here. The paper reported an initial police report it obtained called the attack unprovoked, and that prosecutors said Gayden was struck as she walked away and suffered an injury to her left temple with arterial bleeding. Assistant Public Defender Brett Balmer told reporters Gayden had been hospitalized repeatedly for psychiatric problems and "never got the help she needed." Balmer said, "Shavon Gayden did not slip through the cracks of a functional system," and, "Shavon Gayden walked right through the open door of a system that does not provide any mental health services [or] sustained treatment for people with psychiatric illness," and, "This all could have been avoided." In court Wednesday, the Sun-Times reported, Balmer asked Judge John Hock for a psychiatric evaluation and said, "It will be an issue on Friday," and, "I have seen her; I am concerned about her mental status at this time." Hock said they would take that up Friday. Balmer also asked for records from as many as 10 hospitals. The Sun-Times reported Balmer said Gayden does not have to be found mentally fit to appear for Friday's detention hearing, but she does have to be physically present, and that she will soon be moved to the Cook County Jail. Wednesday's request was a request. Friday is when a judge acted on custody.

WTTW reported that on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, a Cook County judge ordered Gayden to remain held at Cook County Jail. She had been unable to attend earlier in the week because she was still hospitalized. WTTW reported she is due back in court Oct. 26. CBS Chicago reported she appeared Friday, that the judge denied her release, and that the judge signed an order for a psychiatric evaluation. CBS Chicago reported that while Balmer was speaking, Gayden interrupted and said "you're not my attorney," "y'all all gonna die," and "all y'all got AIDS." Balmer told CBS Chicago, "She's sick," and, "The prosecutor said she's evil. I would counter by saying she's mentally ill." CBS Chicago reported the judge called Gayden "a danger to the community and pure evil," said she is "as dangerous as a person could be," and said her choice of weapon is knives. WTTW reported prosecutors said that minutes before the stabbing she threatened to kill a sales associate. Those Friday statements are what the station said was said in court. They are not a verdict on the murder count. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Tuscaloosa police charged Daronte Collins with felony murder after a Saturday apartment-complex shooting.

WBRC's jail photo is captioned Daronte Collins and puts both men at 22. The Tuscaloosa Thread, citing Violent Crimes Unit Lt. Michael Hall, spells the charged man Deronte and puts both at 20. Patch and the Calhoun Journal also use Daronte and 20. A felony-murder count, which the Thread and the Journal describe as Alabama's rule when someone dies during a robbery, is not a finding that Collins fired the shot that killed Tyson. The Thread says the 25-year-old has not been charged.

High Point police charged Kymberli Bowden with first-degree murder in her 13-year-old daughter's death.

The Oct. 8 release is a new murder count on a case the department charged in 2025 as felony child abuse and concealment of death. It is not a trial. The murder-charge release says she remains in jail with no bond. WXII reported a violent-offense hold and a $1 million bond on the older counts. The 2025 release listed her age as 44. The murder-charge release, WXII, and FOX 35 Orlando list 45.

Chicago police charged Chevazz Campbell in the stabbing death of CTA janitor Julian Mobley.

A detention hearing is the first court date. It is not a finding that Campbell stabbed anyone. The department's Sunday release says he robbed and fatally stabbed a 41-year-old man in the 2000 block of West Lake Street. ABC7 and CBS Chicago name that man as Julian Mobley and describe a fare dispute that turned into a stabbing. The department's charge list and CBS Chicago's shorter summary do not match count for count.
