A corrections department investigating a death as a homicide is an open inquiry. It is not a new murder charge filed in court. CDCR, FOX40, and the Sacramento Bee all reported the golf-cart attack and the one-hour gap before Ortega was pronounced dead. None of them reported a criminal complaint against Fleming for this death.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, that it is investigating the death of an incarcerated person at California State Prison, Sacramento, as a homicide. The department said that at about 10:50 a.m., staff were using a golf cart to escort Shunki E. Fleming and Mario Ortega inside the prison when Fleming got out of his hand restraints and, once his hands were free, began battering Ortega. Staff stopped the cart, stopped the attack, and secured Fleming in handcuffs. An improvised weapon was recovered at the scene. The department did not say who had the weapon. Staff called 911 and started life-saving measures. Ortega was taken to an outside hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead at about 11:50 a.m. FOX40 and the Sacramento Bee reported that account from the department. FOX40 described the attack as alleged. The Bee called the death an apparent homicide. An investigation labeled a homicide is the department's classification. It is not a charge a prosecutor has filed.

CDCR said Fleming was moved to a restricted housing unit while the prison's Investigative Services Unit continues, and that the Office of the Inspector General was notified. FOX40 reported the same housing move. The Sacramento Bee reported the prison is also known as New Folsom, to distinguish it from Folsom State Prison. Restricted housing is a custody placement inside a sentence he is already serving. It is not a new conviction.

CDCR said Fleming, 29, was received from Los Angeles County on Aug. 8, 2019, and sentenced to 42 years for second-degree robbery and assault with a semiautomatic firearm, with firearm enhancements, plus a concurrent three years for assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. The department said Kern County sentenced him on March 26, 2021, to three years for possession and manufacture of a deadly weapon by an incarcerated person, and that Kings County sentenced him on Feb. 10, 2025, to two years for the same in-prison offense. FOX40 reported the 42-year Los Angeles County term and the later in-prison weapon sentences. Those are sentences already imposed. They are not a finding about Tuesday's escort. CDCR said Ortega, 47, was received from Riverside County on April 29, 1999, and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for kidnapping, carjacking, and sodomy with force, with firearm enhancements, and that San Joaquin County on Sept. 2, 2025, added two consecutive years for an in-prison deadly-weapon offense. No victim of that 1999 case is named in the release. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Tuscaloosa police charged Daronte Collins with felony murder after a Saturday apartment-complex shooting.

WBRC's jail photo is captioned Daronte Collins and puts both men at 22. The Tuscaloosa Thread, citing Violent Crimes Unit Lt. Michael Hall, spells the charged man Deronte and puts both at 20. Patch and the Calhoun Journal also use Daronte and 20. A felony-murder count, which the Thread and the Journal describe as Alabama's rule when someone dies during a robbery, is not a finding that Collins fired the shot that killed Tyson. The Thread says the 25-year-old has not been charged.

High Point police charged Kymberli Bowden with first-degree murder in her 13-year-old daughter's death.

The Oct. 8 release is a new murder count on a case the department charged in 2025 as felony child abuse and concealment of death. It is not a trial. The murder-charge release says she remains in jail with no bond. WXII reported a violent-offense hold and a $1 million bond on the older counts. The 2025 release listed her age as 44. The murder-charge release, WXII, and FOX 35 Orlando list 45.

Chicago police charged Chevazz Campbell in the stabbing death of CTA janitor Julian Mobley.

A detention hearing is the first court date. It is not a finding that Campbell stabbed anyone. The department's Sunday release says he robbed and fatally stabbed a 41-year-old man in the 2000 block of West Lake Street. ABC7 and CBS Chicago name that man as Julian Mobley and describe a fare dispute that turned into a stabbing. The department's charge list and CBS Chicago's shorter summary do not match count for count.
