Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged Stanley Burrison in the wrong-way crash that killed Dorthea Leak, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Mark Price's Nov. 5, 2026, story says Burrison, 66, was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 3, and charged with second degree murder after the Oct. 11 crash that killed Leak, 92, in the 2700 block of Beatties Ford Road. CMPD's Oct. 15 release and WSOC spell him Stanley. WBTV spells him Staley and spells the Kia a Sorrento. The October pages say no charge list. The Observer's November page prints one.

Second degree, as two words on the Observer's charge list, is the count that page prints. Stanley, and Staley, are not the same spelling. Kia Sorento, and Kia Sorrento, are not the same spelling. Tesla, and Telsa, are not the same spelling. Six people taken to hospitals, and five, are not the same count. Speed and impairment suspected, on the October pages, is not a sentence on the Observer's Nov. 5 charge story. No charges have been announced, on WSOC's Oct. 15 story, and a charge list dated after the Nov. 3 arrest, are not the same status.

The Charlotte Observer, by Mark Price, November 5, 2026, at 5:20 AM, with no zone on that clock, reported a Charlotte man is facing a second degree murder charge in a crash near the intersection of Interstate 85 and Beatties Ford Road, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Second degree, with no hyphen, is the spelling in the headline and in the charge list. It reported Stanley Burrison's driving led to a three-vehicle crash that killed 92-year-old Dorthea Leak and sent five people to hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Five people, in that sentence, is the Observer's count. It reported the crash was around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, in the 2700 block of Beatties Ford Road, just north of Interstate 85. It quoted CMPD: "Upon arrival, officers located a Ram pick-up truck on its side, a Tesla, and a Kia Sorento with heavy front-end damage," and, "The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Ram, Stanley Burrison, 66, was operating his truck on the wrong side of the roadway at a high rate of speed and struck the Kia head on. The Telsa was struck during the course of the collision." Tesla, in the first quotation, and Telsa, in the second, are not the same spelling, and they are in the same story's quotations. It reported Leak was a passenger in the Kia and died the next day at a hospital. Died the next day does not print the date Oct. 12. It reported he was arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and charged with second degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, felony serious injury by vehicle, speeding, and reckless driving. A Charlotte man, and a Charlotte driver, are both on that page. The page does not print impairment.

CMPD's release, published October 15, 2026, and datelined Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, reported detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash in the Metro Division. It reported that on Sunday, Oct. 11, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers responded to a crash with injuries involving three vehicles in the 2700 block of Beatties Ford Road, and that Charlotte Fire and MEDIC also responded. Approximately 4:30 p.m., and around 4:30 p.m., are not the same precision. It reported officers located a Ram pick-up truck on its side, a Tesla, and a Kia Sorento with heavy front-end damage, and that MEDIC transported six individuals to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Six individuals, on this release, and five people, on the Observer, are not the same count. It reported a passenger of the Kia, Dorthea Leak, 92, was pronounced deceased at the hospital on Monday, Oct. 12. Pronounced deceased on Monday, Oct. 12, and died the next day, are not the same sentence. It printed the same preliminary paragraph the Observer quoted, including Stanley Burrison, 66, and including Telsa. It reported speed and impairment are suspected factors for Burrison, pending further investigation. Suspected, and charged, are not the same status. Impairment is on this release. It is not on the Observer's Nov. 5 story. It reported the victim's next of kin has been notified, that the investigation is ongoing, and that the report number is 20261011-1630-04. The release does not list an arrest, a charge, or a Nov. 3 date. It is dated October 15, which is before the Tuesday the Observer printed for the arrest. WSOC, by WSOCTV.com News Staff, October 15, 2026, at 2:49 pm EDT, reported Dorthea Leak was a passenger in a Kia Sorento hit by a pickup truck driven by 66-year-old Stanley Burrison in the 2700 block of Beatties Ford Road. Pickup, as one word, and pick-up, hyphenated, are not the same spelling. It reported the crash was around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, that MEDIC transported six people to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and that speed and impairment are suspected factors, pending further investigation. Six people, on WSOC, and six individuals, on CMPD, and five people, on the Observer, are not the same count. It reported Leak was pronounced dead at the hospital on Monday. Pronounced dead, and pronounced deceased, are not the same word. It reported, "No charges have been announced." That sentence is on the Oct. 15 page. It is not the Observer's Nov. 5 charge list.

WBTV, by Spencer Chrisman, published Oct. 15, 2026, at 10:46 PM EDT, on a URL dated 2026/10/16, reported a 92-year-old woman died this week from her injuries after a head-on collision over the weekend in north Charlotte. This week, in the lede, and on Monday, Oct. 12, in the next paragraph, are not the same span. The URL date and the published clock are not the same date. A line under the headline reads that 5 other people had life-threatening injuries. It reported that around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, police said six people were hurt with life-threatening injuries in a three-vehicle crash on Beatties Ford Road, and that it was not immediately clear the condition of the other five people injured. Six hurt with life-threatening injuries, 5 other people in that headline line, and the condition of the other five not immediately clear, are all on that page. They are not the same count and not the same certainty. North Charlotte is on WBTV and in WSOC's headline. The Observer prints the 2700 block, just north of Interstate 85, and does not print the words north Charlotte. WBTV does not print the 2700 block. It reported police said 66-year-old Staley Burrison was driving his Ram pick-up truck at a high rate of speed on the wrong side of Beatties Ford Road, hit a Kia Sorrento head-on, and that a Tesla was also struck. Staley, on WBTV, and Stanley, on the Observer, on CMPD's Oct. 15 release, and on WSOC, are not the same spelling. Neither spelling is selected here. Kia Sorrento, and Kia Sorento, are not the same spelling. Tesla, on WBTV, and Telsa, inside the CMPD quotation, are not the same spelling. It reported Leak was a passenger in the Sorrento. It reported speed and impairment are suspected factors, pending further investigation. It reported the identities of the other five people was not released. Those five are not named here. WBTV's Oct. 15 story does not print a charge, an arrest, or Nov. 3. The charge list is the Observer's Nov. 5 account of what police reported after the Tuesday arrest. The other injured people are not named on any of these pages. A charge is not a conviction. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
