True Crime

Todd Capstick is charged with first-degree murder after Dawn Capstick was found shot in the 3100 block of Highway 61.

First Alert 4, and the same copy on KFVS 12, say he shot and killed her around 9:00 a.m. and was arrested around 10:00 a.m. during a stop just after 10:00 a.m. Daily Journal Online and The Leader put the traffic stop at 10:01 a.m., after a deputy found her at about 9:15 a.m.

First-degree murder and armed criminal action are the counts on every page read here. Around 9:00 a.m., a 9:00 a.m. well-being dispatch, and a deputy finding her at about 9:15 a.m. are not the same clock. Around 10:00 a.m., just after 10:00 a.m., and 10:01 a.m. are not the same arrest time. He is in the Jefferson County Jail without bond, and no page read here printed a court date.

First Alert 4, by First Alert 4 Staff, published Nov. 5, 2026, at 9:20 p.m. CST. The same page prints an Updated line as a relative time and does not print a second clock. KFVS 12 prints that copy, the same 9:20 p.m. CST line, a First Alert 4 dateline, and a copyright line for KMOV. The copy says Todd Capstick, 55, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, and that police say he shot and killed his wife, Dawn Capstick, 56, at their home in the 3100 block of Highway 61 around 9:00 a.m. Thursday before he fled south on I-55. It says US Marshals arrested him around 10:00 a.m. during a traffic stop just after 10:00 a.m. Thursday, and that he is held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond. Around 10:00 a.m., and just after 10:00 a.m., are both in that sentence. Daily Journal Online, by Lisa Brotherton-Barnes, dated November 5, 2026, with no clock, spells him Todd M. Capstick and spells her Dawn M. Capstick, 56, also of Festus, and attributes the charge to Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak. The Leader, by Leader staff, dated Nov. 5, 2026, with no clock, spells him Todd Michael Capstick. Todd Capstick, Todd M. Capstick, and Todd Michael Capstick are not the same form. Dawn Capstick, and Dawn M. Capstick, are not the same form. Highway 61, on First Alert 4 and KFVS 12, U.S. Highway 61, on Daily Journal Online, and Hwy. 61 in the R-7 area south of Festus, on The Leader, are not the same place line.

The clock of the shooting is not the clock of the call. Daily Journal Online says a deputy was dispatched at 9 a.m. Thursday to the 3100 block of U.S. Highway 61 for a well-being check, and that after reports of a possible shooting the deputy found Dawn Capstick with multiple apparent gunshot wounds at approximately 9:15 a.m. It says the deputy notified Jefferson County 911 and began lifesaving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. The Leader says a deputy was sent at about 9 a.m. and arrived at about 9:15 a.m., alerted Jefferson County 911 Dispatch, and started lifesaving measures. First Alert 4's around 9:00 a.m. is the time it gives for the shooting and the flight. It does not print a dispatch, a 9:15 a.m. arrival, or lifesaving measures. Daily Journal Online and The Leader both say a Detective Bureau analyst at 9:26 a.m. used the Flock Safety camera network and saw the vehicle southbound on Interstate 55 in Ste. Genevieve County. Both say custody came at 10:01 a.m. Daily Journal Online also says that within minutes marshals located the vehicle and conducted the stop. Within minutes of 9:26 a.m., and 10:01 a.m., are both on that page. They are not the same interval. The Leader's lede says he was arrested in Cape Girardeau County about an hour after the shooting was reported. A Jefferson County Sheriff's Office statement on that page says the arrest was "in less than an hour and three counties away." Daily Journal Online says Sheriff Dave Marshak described the arrest as less than an hour after the initial dispatch and across county lines. About an hour after the shooting was reported, less than an hour after the initial dispatch, and less than an hour and three counties away are not the same measure. US Marshals, on First Alert 4, the U.S. Marshals Service, on Daily Journal Online, and the U.S. Marshal's Office, on The Leader, are not the same agency line. First Alert 4 does not print 9:15 a.m., 9:26 a.m., 10:01 a.m., Ste. Genevieve County, Flock, or Sheriff Dave Marshak.

What deputies found is not one sequence. The Leader, citing the probable-cause statement, says Dawn M. Capstick was found in a bedroom, appeared to have been shot several times, and was pronounced dead at the home. Daily Journal Online says multiple apparent gunshot wounds and lifesaving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. It does not print a bedroom or a pronouncement. First Alert 4 says shot and killed, and does not print either account. The Leader says a female family member was on a video call with Dawn Capstick when something was said about shooting, that the phone appeared to be on the floor, and that Todd Capstick was briefly seen before the call was muted and then paused. She is not named. The Leader says security video showed Dawn Capstick last entering through the garage, followed by Todd Capstick, and that "About about 22 minutes" later he left through the garage door allegedly holding a black-and-silver handgun, put the gun in a pants pocket, and got into a Ford pickup. About is printed twice. The Leader says the probable-cause statement says that gun was found in the pickup. Daily Journal Online and First Alert 4 do not print the call, the video, the pickup, or the gun. The Leader and Daily Journal Online say he was held first at the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office and then taken to the Jefferson County Jail. The Leader adds that the jail is in Hillsboro. First Alert 4 says the Jefferson County Jail without bond and does not print Hillsboro or the Cape Girardeau hold. Daily Journal Online says Sheriff Marshak thanked the U.S. Marshals Service, the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office, and Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney Trisha Stefanski and her staff for an in-custody warrant. Those thanks are not in the First Alert 4 copy. The Leader's first version said a person was found dead, spokesman Grant Bissell said deputies were called at about 9 a.m., and the person was not identified. The update names Dawn Capstick. The Leader also says the Jefferson R-7 School District started a soft lockdown at 9:39 a.m. and ended it at 10:03 a.m., and it quotes Superintendent David Haug. First Alert 4 and Daily Journal Online do not print the lockdown. A slug line on the Daily Journal Online page includes "FESTUS MURDER CHAPICK." The story spells the name Capstick. A charge is not a conviction. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

WJLA says Judge Neal Kravitz found Jaime Macedo guilty of voluntary manslaughter while armed. NBC4 says he pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Voluntary manslaughter while armed, and voluntary manslaughter, and manslaughter, are not the same count. A bench outside Father O'Connell Hall, and a park on the campus, and a small plaza by that hall, and the 600 block of Alumni Lane, are not the same place. Brookland-CUA Metro, and Brookland Metro, and Brookland-Catholic University Metro, are not the same station line. Snapchat messages, and a message, and an urgent message, are not the same account. Cash App, and cash app, and $300 with no app named, are not the same line. Judge Kravitz accepted the plea and found Jaime Macedo guilty of voluntary manslaughter while armed. A 12-to-15-year range is not the sentence. Sentencing has not happened.
