Murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime are the charges the Post and Courier says the sheriff's department filed. The Nov. 2 release is the accusation. It is not a finding that Vincent Belton killed the victim. The story does not print the victim's name. Dead on arrival is the paper's phrase for what emergency medical services did.

The Post and Courier, in a story by Caleb Bozard dated Nov. 2, 2026, reported that authorities have charged a man with murder after an Oct. 30 shooting in a Columbia neighborhood. It reported Vincent Belton, 33, has been arrested in connection with a shooting death, which it attributed to a Richland County Sheriff's Department press release the same day. It reported deputies responded to the 200 block of Irongate Drive in Columbia just before 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 for a reported shooting. It reported the incident was in a residential neighborhood off of Two Notch Road and near Sequicentennial State Park. Sequicentennial is the spelling in the story. It reported deputies found an unresponsive adult victim at the scene and that emergency medical services pronounced the victim dead on arrival. The story's sentence describing the wounds is not repeated here. The story does not print the victim's name.

The paper reported investigators "were able to quickly identify" Belton as the shooter, and it quoted the department: "The investigation revealed Belton and the victim are known to one another, and were engaged in an altercation at the incident location, when Belton shot and killed the victim." That sentence is the sheriff's department, as the Post and Courier printed it. It is the account attached to the charges. It is not a verdict. The paper reported Belton's family turned him in to sheriff's department headquarters on Oct. 31, that he was taken into custody without incident, and that he was transported to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. It reported he has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Charged is the step the release describes. The story does not report a court date, a plea, or a bail amount. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
