True Crime

A Texas husband and wife are charged in the I-170 shooting death of 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson, and federal records tie the husband's car to a second St. Louis highway shooting.

Willie Herndon, 42, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, and Taiya Herndon, 45, with hindering prosecution, in the Oct. 14, 2026, killing of the McCluer North High School senior in St. Louis County, KSDK and First Alert 4 reported. Both are from Arlington, Texas.

Investigators say license plate readers broke this case, tracking the couple's SUV across the river to a hotel in Caseyville, Ill. The more unsettling detail is in the federal complaint: a matching cartridge headstamp at a highway shooting three days earlier, with lab results still pending. Nothing in the reports explains why the couple was in St. Louis or why anyone would fire at a teenager driving to the zoo. Those are questions the case will have to answer in court.

Willie Herndon, 42, and his wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, both of Arlington, Texas, are charged in the death of Alyssa Wilson, a 17-year-old who was shot while driving on Interstate 170 in St. Louis County on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, KSDK and First Alert 4 reported. According to the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, Willie Herndon was charged Oct. 16 with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, and Taiya Herndon was charged the same day with hindering prosecution, KSDK reported. Prosecutor Melissa Price-Smith said the hindering charge is for driving her husband to Illinois after the shooting, First Alert 4 reported. He is held on a $1 million cash-only bond and she is held on a $500,000 cash-only bond, the stations reported.

At a news conference Monday, Oct. 19, the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis said surveillance video showed a white SUV pulling onto the shoulder of southbound I-170 just south of St. Charles Rock Road, First Alert 4 reported. Investigators said Willie Herndon got out and stood outside the vehicle briefly, a gunshot was fired, and he got back in and drove away, with Taiya Herndon also inside, according to the station. Police told First Alert 4 the vehicle was registered to her. Officers called to a crash in the southbound lanes near Midland Boulevard in Overland found Wilson shot inside her car, and she later died at a hospital, the station reported. Major Case Squad Lt. Jack Abell said Wilson was driving to the Saint Louis Zoo, KSDK reported.

Investigators used license plate readers to track the vehicle to a hotel in Caseyville, Ill., where the couple was taken into custody Friday, First Alert 4 and KSDK reported. A search of the hotel room turned up evidence including the gun, officials said, and Willie Herndon gave details about his involvement in the shooting along with information "pertaining to possible ongoing investigations in other areas," according to First Alert 4. That is investigators' account of what he told them, and it has not been tested in court.

Federal court records add more, First Alert 4 reported. Willie Herndon was also charged Friday in the Southern District of Illinois with being a felon in possession of a firearm. The federal complaint says surveillance video shows his white Buick slowly approaching I-170 and Midland Boulevard about 7:03 p.m., a person investigators identify as Herndon getting out around 7:05 p.m., and, seconds after Wilson's car passed at 7:07 p.m., a gunshot and her car crashing, according to the station. Documents say she was shot with a high-powered rifle. Investigators found a cartridge case stamped "MaxxTech 23 7.62x39" near the scene the next day and later found a scoped rifle loaded with the same ammunition on the couple's hotel bed, the complaint says. It also links the Buick to an Oct. 11 shooting near Interstate 55, where a vehicle that had just exited at Bates Avenue was hit by a single gunshot and a cartridge case with the same headstamp was found. Lab testing to determine whether both were fired from the same gun is still pending, First Alert 4 reported. The complaint lists prior convictions in Los Angeles in 2001, 2005 and 2015, the station reported.

Wilson was a senior at McCluer North High School, a student-athlete and office aide who was looking forward to college, the school said. Her father, Robert Hickman, thanked law enforcement at Monday's news conference and said she was 60 days from turning 18, First Alert 4 reported. "This was a senseless act," Hickman said. It is unclear why the couple came to St. Louis, the station reported. The reports did not name attorneys for either defendant. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff's officials named Edward Villa as the suspect after Katie Kinder, her son and her mother were found shot to death in Happy Valley.

Thursday's briefing names the three people and names Villa as the only suspect. The warrant was three counts of first-degree murder. He was found dead before an arrest. KPTV, citing Warrenton police, called it an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. KGW reported Detective Matt Lysaght would not go past a gunshot deputies heard, a firearm in the room, and the fact that no officer fired. KPTV and OPB call the motel the South Jetty Inn. The Oregonian calls it the South Jetty Motel.

An Oahu grand jury indicted Orion Satori on a second-degree murder charge in the Young Street stabbing of Kiril Stoimenov.

An indictment means a grand jury found enough to send the case forward. It is not a finding of guilt. Police have said Satori did the stabbing, according to Hawaii News Now. The next step is arraignment, where he will be asked to enter a plea. Second-degree murder in Hawaii carries a maximum of life with the possibility of parole, the station reported.
