True Crime

Doraville police arrested Daniel Roman-Cortez after Pablo Gutierrez-Gallegos was killed outside a Buford Highway restaurant.

FOX 5 Atlanta reported that officers stopped Roman-Cortez in a blue pickup after gunfire early Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, and that he told them, "I shot him, I killed him." Law&Crime reported Monday that jail records list murder and six aggravated-assault counts. FOX 5 said that night that formal charges had not been released.

Sunday's police accounts and Monday's jail-record account do not say the same thing about the charging document. FOX 5 said investigators had not released formal charges. Law&Crime said the DeKalb County Jail roster shows murder, six counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, and no bond, and that no next date is listed. The ages, 44 and 44, are in that jail-record account. The quoted sentence is what police say he told officers. It is not a plea entered in court.

FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Doraville officers went to the 5700 block of Buford Highway around midnight Sunday after 911 calls of active gunfire. The station reported they saw Daniel Roman-Cortez trying to pull away in a blue pickup, stopped the truck, and that he surrendered and said, "I shot him, I killed him," according to investigators. 11Alive and WSB-TV reported the same stop, the same quote, and the same midnight call on Oct. 25. WSB Radio reported the call as near Interstate 285. FOX 5 reported officers then found Pablo Gutierrez-Gallegos unresponsive on the pavement in front of a restaurant in the 5800 block. 11Alive also put the body in the 5800 block. WSB-TV reported he was unresponsive in front of a restaurant and did not print the 5800 block. WSB Radio reported he was found outside a restaurant about a block from the stop. FOX 5, 11Alive, and WSB-TV reported DeKalb County paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene after officers tried to save him.

FOX 5 reported gunfire tore through the building and glass fragments struck two people seated inside. The station reported medics treated both at the scene and cleared them of serious injury. 11Alive and WSB-TV reported both were evaluated and cleared. Law&Crime reported two customers were injured by glass, treated, and released. None of the stories names those two people. FOX 5 reported Roman-Cortez told investigators Gutierrez-Gallegos was "sleeping with his wife." 11Alive, WSB-TV, and Law&Crime reported that account from police. That is what police say he told them about a motive. It is not a finding about anyone who was not shot.

FOX 5 reported the specific business has not been confirmed, and that formal charges had not been released. The station reported Doraville police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are processing the scene, and that witnesses can call the Doraville Police Department at 770-455-1000. WSB-TV printed the same phone number. 11Alive and WSB-TV reported he remained in police custody and that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting. Law&Crime, citing a Doraville police press release and jail records, reported he is in the DeKalb County Jail without bond, that the records list murder and six counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, and that no next court date is listed. Law&Crime reported those records list him as 44 and Gutierrez-Gallegos as 44. FOX 5, 11Alive, and WSB-TV did not print either age. Law&Crime also reported Doraville Police Chief Deyette said the department is committed to a thorough investigation and to pursuing justice for the victim and his family. 11Alive printed that quote. The stories do not give the chief's first name. Law&Crime reported a sister wrote on a fundraising page that Gutierrez-Gallegos was originally from Mexico. The sister is not named.

A stop, a booking, and a sentence police say he spoke beside the truck are not a verdict. FOX 5's report that charges had not been released, and Law&Crime's report of what the jail roster showed on Monday, are two accounts of the paperwork. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Lakeland police charged boxer Edgar Berlanga with aggravated battery after an Oct. 18 argument in Polk County.

The two counts are charges from an Oct. 18 allegation. BoxingScene has the charge titles, the bail, and the arraignment time. The New York Post has the affidavit's account of a pistol and a woman who got away to a 7-Eleven. An affidavit is not a conviction. She is not named here.

An FBI agent fatally shot Chadwick Clark during a Dixmoor warrant operation, and the FBI says the shooting is under review.

The FBI account is an agent-involved shooting, one person dead, no agent hurt, and an internal review. The family's account that Clark was unarmed, and a police source's count of people in custody, are not in the FBI statement. A review is not a charge.

Chief Judge Leigh Martin May sentenced Edwin Brant Frost IV to 15 years in the First Liberty fraud.

Monday's term is the sentence on a guilty plea to one count of wire fraud. It is not a jury verdict. The U.S. Attorney's Office, FOX 5 Atlanta, and The Citizen print the same restitution figure. The Newnan Times-Herald prints a figure that is fifty dollars lower.
