Two killed and two injured, in the afternoon briefing accounts, and multiple fatalities and casualties, in the 8:30 a.m. release, are not the same count. KSBW reported no suspect has been identified and that the shooting has not been classified as a homicide. A scene that is still being processed is not a charging paper.
KSBW, updated at 1:07 p.m. PST on Nov. 2, 2026, reported that two people were killed in a shooting just after midnight Monday at the end of Jetty Road in Moss Landing, which it attributed to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. It reported that one person was hospitalized with gunshot wounds and was in unknown condition, and that another person suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, which it attributed to officials at a news conference Monday. It reported the ages and identities of the victims have not been released. It reported the circumstances remain unknown, that officials said they have not identified any suspects, and that they have not yet classified the shooting as a homicide. It reported deputies and detectives were at the scene Monday morning, that California State Parks police closed Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach at the sheriff's office's request, and that authorities said there was no active threat to the community. The story does not print a commander's name. ABC News, by Meredith Deliso, with a byline time of November 2, 2026, 3:58 p.m. and no zone printed on that line, reported authorities responded to Moss Landing State Beach shortly before 2 a.m. local time Monday for reports of shots fired. Shortly before 2 a.m. is not just after midnight. It reported two people were found dead at the scene, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, according to Comd. Andrew Rosas of the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. It reported a third person was transported from the scene to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and that a fourth person arrived at a local hospital suffering from gunshot wounds whose current condition is unknown. KSBW's second injured person is "injuries that were not considered life-threatening." ABC News's third person is non-life-threatening and transported from the scene. KSBW does not print that the person with non-life-threatening injuries was shot. ABC News does not print "not yet classified the shooting as a homicide," and it does not print that no suspects have been identified. Comd. Andrew Rosas, in ABC News, and the absence of a commander's name in KSBW, are not the same attribution.
NBC Bay Area, in a staff story whose page, when read, printed "Published 4 hours ago" and "Updated 11 minutes ago" rather than an absolute clock, led with at least two people killed in Moss Landing early Monday morning. The same story reported that during an afternoon news briefing, sheriff's officials confirmed two people are dead and two others are injured. At least two, in the lede, and two, in the briefing sentence, are not the same count. It reported the sheriff's office said the shooting happened just after midnight along Jetty Road, which runs between Moss Landing State Beach and Elkhorn Slough. It reported there is no active threat, that authorities closed Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach, and that an investigation is underway. It does not print the injury split, a commander's name, a suspect line, or a homicide-classification line. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office release, as distributed by Public with a date and time of 11/02/2026 8:30 a.m. and a media contact of Andres Rosas, Commander, said deputies and detectives were on scene of a shooting that occurred just after midnight on November 2, 2026, along Jetty Road in Moss Landing, and that there are multiple fatalities and casualties confirmed. Multiple fatalities and casualties is not two killed and two injured. Andres Rosas, on that release, and Andrew Rosas, in ABC News, are not the same spelling. The release said California State Parks Police have closed Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach at the sheriff's office's request, that there is no active threat to the Moss Landing Community at this time, and that this is an active investigation and no further information will be released at this time. The release does not say no suspects have been identified, and it does not say the shooting has not been classified as a homicide. The Daily Mail, by Rachel Bowman, published at 15:05 EDT on Nov. 2, 2026, and updated at 16:12 EDT, still reported the release account. It quoted the sheriff's office as saying, "There are multiple fatalities, and casualties confirmed." The release text has no comma between fatalities and and. It reported the office did not specify how many people were involved, what led up to the shooting, or if any arrests have been made. "If any arrests have been made" is not KSBW's "have not identified any suspects." The Daily Mail's headline says several others were injured. The body says the office did not specify how many. It reported California State Parks police responded and that the state park beach is closed, which it attributed to ABC7. ABC7 is not the ABC News story above, and a beach closure is not the release's sentence that Jetty Road and the beach are both closed.
ABC News quoted Rosas at the briefing: "We have no information on whether these individuals knew each other. We have no details whatsoever," and, "This is an active scene, and they are in the process of trying to determine exactly what happened." It reported he said it will be a lengthy investigation, and that the two deceased people have yet to be identified. It reported Chief Park Ranger Mike Dippel of California State Parks said the beach closes at sunset, so "these people were here after hours." KSBW, NBC Bay Area, the release, and the Daily Mail did not print Dippel or the after-hours sentence. KSBW reported Senator John Laird issued a statement that included, "This unspeakable horror has also hit home on the Central Coast, with reports of multiple fatalities just after midnight today in Moss Landing. The pain and suffering of all those impacted is impossible to measure, and my heart goes out to everyone," and a line giving a Monterey County office number of (831) 657-6315. The Daily Mail reported he wrote on social media, printed "impossible to measure and my heart" without the comma, and did not print the telephone number. Wrote on social media, and issued a statement, are not the same description. The platform is not named here. KSBW reported the ages and identities have not been released. This story does not name them. No one has been identified as a suspect in the KSBW account, and the morning release said no further information would be released at that time. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
