Police have an arrest on suspicion, not a filed criminal complaint. The San Bernardino County district attorney decides what charges, if any, are filed. Witness accounts of a rider being dragged for about a mile are in some reports and not in the police release. Two people are dead, and their names have not been released.
Two bicyclists were killed and two others were hurt late Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, when a driver struck riders in a self-coordinated Halloween group ride in Montclair, California, the Montclair Police Department said, as reported by CBS Los Angeles, The Press-Enterprise and ABC7 Los Angeles. CBS Los Angeles reported police said the crash was reported at about 10:39 p.m. near Kingsley Street and Tudor Avenue. The Press-Enterprise reported the police release said about 30 bicyclists were riding east on Kingsley Street when a westbound vehicle struck several of them at the Tudor Avenue intersection.
Police said one bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and a second rider, a woman, died at a hospital, CBS Los Angeles reported. Police described the rider who died at the scene as a 25-year-old man and the woman as 30, and said she died just after 1 a.m. Sunday, the Daily Mail reported. Another rider was hospitalized with major injuries and was in stable condition, police said. A fourth had a minor head laceration and declined treatment, The Press-Enterprise reported, citing the release. Police have not released the names of the two people who died.
The driver fled immediately after the collision, police said. The Press-Enterprise reported that with help from detectives and witnesses, officers found him at his home near the crash scene. Valentin Alberto Rodriguez, 38, of Montclair, was arrested at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury or death, felony hit-and-run involving death or permanent, serious injury, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, CBS Los Angeles and The Press-Enterprise reported. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center, both outlets reported. The Daily Mail reported the vehicle was a Honda Accord.
Police said the ride was self-coordinated and not affiliated with the City of Montclair. The Daily Mail, citing KTLA, reported witnesses said one rider was dragged more than a mile. The Daily Mail noted the police release did not mention any dragging. An early NBC Los Angeles report said a bicyclist was dragged about a mile and that the driver left the car near Amherst Avenue and Flora Street. That report was published while police were still searching for the driver. The police release, as quoted by the other outlets, says officers found him at his home.
An arrest on suspicion is not a criminal charge. Prosecutors had not announced charges in the reports published Sunday, and no court date had been reported. Police asked anyone with information to call the Montclair Police Department at 909-621-4771, The Press-Enterprise and the Daily Mail reported. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
